Sheffield Utd vs Brentford: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 9th December 2023
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Bramall Lane

Match Preview:

The big news this week for Sheffield United is that Chris Wilder was brought back into the club after Paul Heckingbottom was sacked. In fairness the sacking wasn’t a surprise but perhaps bringing back the former manager was. Some may see it as short sighted but at the same time Wilder did have a 46% win rate with the Blades. Bringing Wilder back for his first game at home to Liverpool never looked like ending well and they did lose but they also played good football and made Liverpool work for the win. The game ended 2-0 but up until the 90th minute it was only 1-0 and the game was in the balance.

Wilder has a big job on his hands with the club bottom of the league and only having earned 5 points so far. They have lost their last three games and are five points from safety, it’s a no brainer that they have to start winning games and being at home one would believe all of the players will be up for this game.

Brentford are in 11th place and in midweek they lost 2-1 away to Brighton and that means they have now lost three of their last four matches. Although they have had some tough games to navigate including having to face Liverpool and Arsenal. The Bees would move past Chelsea with victory for a few hours at least. Away form though has seen three defeats from their past four.

Team News:

Sheffield United: George Baldock will be assessed because of a recent leg injury. Rhian Brewster may return but is only 50/50 to do so because of a lack of match fitness. Oliver McBurnie and Oliver Norwood are both suspended for this game. Rhys Norrington-Davies has a lack of match fitness and is only 50/50 to return for this game. Chris Basham, Tom Davies, John Egan and Daniel Jebbison all remain sidelined.

Brentford: Bryan Mbeumo is out with an ankle injury and could be missing for for a few weeks. Mathias Jensen is only 50/50 to return due to a thigh injury, Nathan Collins and Joshua Dasilva are not expected back until next weekend at the earliest. Kristoffer Ajer, Kevin Schade and Araon Hickey are not expected back for another month. Ivan Toney is suspended until next month and Rico Henry is out for the season with a knee injury.

Sheffield Utd vs Brentford Head to Head:

Sheffield Utd vs Brentford Prediction:

The value looks very good on Sheffield Utd. Wilder is back, the players have upped their game, they remain at home, they are playing a side where they have a very good recent record over and Brentford’s biggest threat in front of goal Bryan Mbeumo is out injured, what more convincing does one need?

Football of course isn’t always that straight forward but the Blades are a good price to win and that allows us to use a very safe handicap, and in fact there are a lot of open markets for this fixture. The lack of goals in this fixture is a high success rate and if Wilder’s side can put in a brave performance like the one they did against Liverpool we see them causing Brentford problems.
