Newcastle vs Chelsea: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 12th November 2022
Kick off at 5:30pm GMT
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

In many ways Newcastle are Chelsea circa 2004 when the Londoners were taken over and had millions injected into them as the new force of English football. This is the same hope at Newcastle and the Magpies have started the season in great form. Eddie Howe’s side are in 3rd place and have lost just once so far. With 27 points they are only 5 points behind Manchester City and seven behind league leaders Arsenal. Not many expected Newcastle already to be a top four contender but here they are and they have created a 4 point gap to 5th placed Manchester United.

The best form team in the league are Newcastle and they have won their last 4 games in a row. Last weekend Ralph Hasenhuttl’s job was lost as Newcastle beat them 4-1, they smashed Aston Villa 4-0 before then and they are unbeaten at home. They have collected 15 points from a possible 21 at home and after a season that started with too many draws they have corrected that now and won their last 3 home games scoring 10 goals in those games. In midweek they drew 0-0 at home to Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup however they knocked the Eagles out on penalties.

It’s been almost a month since Chelsea won a game in the league and the honeymoon period for Graham Potter looks well and truly over. This did include navigating themselves out of a very tricky Champions League situation to qualify for the knock out rounds though. But in the league points are starting to be lost. A 4-1 defeat against Brighton was followed up by a home loss against Arsenal and the gloves are certainly off now. The Blues have fallen six points adrift of a top 4 finish and Potter’s former side Brighton have gone back above them. It’s been just 2 points earned for Potter’s side from their last 12. Misery has been compounded by being knocked out of the EFL Cup in midweek away to Manchester City in a 2-0 loss.

Team News:

Newcastle: Callum Wilson is a doubt because of illness and he will be assessed. Paul Dummett is out with no fixed return date due to his calf. Ryan Fraser will be assessed but is only 50/50 to make this one. Alexander Isak will return after the World Cup with his thigh injury.

Chelsea: Ben Chilwell is out with a hamstring injury, Jorginho will be assessed due to his foot injury but hasn’t quite been ruled out. Kepa is out though with the same problem. N’Golo Kante, Reece James and Wesley Fofana are all sidelined.

Newcastle vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Last season Chelsea won this fixture 3-0.

Chelsea have won the last 4 meetings in a row.

Newcastle have won just 2 games from the last 14.

Five of the last six meetings has seen under 2.5 goals.

Newcastle vs Chelsea Prediction:

Newcastle have been full of statement results so far and they can make another one at the weekend by beating Chelsea. Newcastle are on fire and scoring goals although they will sweat a little on the availability of Callum Wilson who has been on form. But here we have a club that have quality and an absolute self belief about them, a belief that stretches outside of the Premier League that they will not lose many games at home, if any this season. One has to wonder also if they are facing Chelsea bang on at the right time with the Blues form dipping. Chelsea have recorded some very good results over Newcastle recently however this ground used to be a graveyard for the Londoners and Newcastle will want that stat to return.

The Magpies can go out with a bang here and send their home fans back happy, and we think everything is aligned for them to win this game. Chelsea will be no pushovers and this is a highly important game for them too, but they are playing away from home against the best form side in the league. This is exciting times for Newcastle. One could argue on paper that Chelsea have the best side but Newcastle have a lot going for them too.
