Newcastle vs Brentford: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 16th September 2023
Kick off at 5:30pm BST
Venue: St James' Park

Match Preview:

For Newcastle this game has to be about getting back on track and manager Eddie Howe may well have written off the first month of the season, looked at the international break and told his players they have a blank canvas again to work on. There has been no doubt that Newcastle compared to last season have so far been underwhelming. Of course it didn’t look that way on the opening weekend after they thrashed Aston Villa 5-1 but that game remains the Magpies only win of the season so far.

Since then the club has lost 3 games in a row. True two of those games were against Manchester City and Liverpool but in their last game not many would have expected them to go down 3-1 at Brighton. You get the sense that the club will be up for this game and be determined and aggressive, Howe’s side need a reaction.

Brentford have started better and are in 8th place with six points, the Bees are unbeaten so far but have drawn 3 of their four games. Their sole win so far came against Fulham in an impressive 3-0 win away from home. They have also held Tottenham to a 2-2 draw and in their latest game they also drew 2-2 with Bournemouth. It is encouraging that the club are scoring goals though and they have 8 so far and have conceded 5.

Team News:

Newcastle: Sven Botman still looks like a doubt with an ankle injury, Elliot Anderson has a knock but is being tipped to recover for this game, Javier Manquillo will be assessed due to a lack of match fitness. Sandro Tonali has a minor muscle injury and should be fine. Alex Murphy has a knock but it isn’t thought to be serious and Emil Krafth is out until at least the end of the month with his knee.

Brentford: Shandon Baptiste is out with a shoulder injury, Mikkel Damsgaard is being pencilled in to return for this game after his muscle injury but there has been no confirmation. Joshuan Dasilva is sidelined and Ivan Toney is suspended until January.

Newcastle vs Brentford Prediction:

It isn’t meant as any disrespect to the opponent because all opponents in the Premier League are getting better and harder to beat by every passing season but you get the sense here that Newcastle are going to give everything in this game. Of course the club's Champions League adventure starts the week after but Howe needs his side to produce not only a result but a good score line. The Magpies have been below par but they have also been unlucky and could have put five or six goals past Liverpool when the sides met a few weeks ago, instead they didn’t take their chances and lost 2-1.

While Newcastle are odds on if they click and we think they will have to put in a great game then the price of 1.50 isn’t the worst we have seen. For Brentford they continue to surprise but surely it is only a matter of time before they start to drop points and when that happens they will struggle away from home and we can only see a good home win here.
