Liverpool vs Luton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 21st February 2024
Kick off at 7:30pm GMT
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

There is still some way to go in the race for the Premier League title but Liverpool will be thinking that this year could present only their 2nd league championship in 34 years. The Reds are in 1st place and came into this week four points ahead of Manchester City and two points in front of Arsenal, the goal is simple to take each game at a time and make sure to win them. For the visit of Luton not only will Jurgen Klopp’s side be expected to win but they will also be expected to score a few goals too. Goals isn’t something the Reds are short of at this moment in time, they scored 4 past hapless Brentford away from home at the weekend, and that means the club has bagged 16 goals in their last five league games.

No team has a better home record than Liverpool and they have won 32 points from a possible 36, which is a superb feat. Liverpool are unbeaten at home winning 10 of their games and drawing twice. They are currently just short of scoring 3 goals per game at home and have also won their last three in a row with victories over Chelsea, Newcastle and Burnley.

Luton have slipped back into the bottom three with Everton claiming a draw on Monday evening. The Hatters have the same points (20) as Everton but their goal difference has put them into the relegation zone. This is an important game for Rob Edwards side as it is their game in hand over teams around them, but there is no denying how difficult it will be. Form over the past six weeks had really improved and had taken the club outside of the bottom three although they come into this game having lost their last two in a row with defeats against Sheffield United and Manchester United and those both took place at home. Away from home the Hatters have lost 6 from 11 games although they have gone unbeaten for their last three games which includes a win over Sheffield United and two draws which came against Burnley and Newcastle in that rather epic game that finished 4-4. Indeed Luton have not tasted defeat on the road since Brentford beat them over two months ago.

Team News:

Liverpool: Alisson has a hamstring injury and will be assessed but he is only 50/50 to make this game. Trent Alexander-Arnold is not due back for at least 10 days as he recovers from a knee injury. Dominik Szoboszlai is out for at least two more weeks due to a muscle injury. Thiago Alcantara, Ben Doak, Stefan Bajcetic and Joel Matip are all out long term with no fixed return dates.

Luton: There are no new injuries for the Hatters however Mads Andersen, Tom Lockyer and Marvelous Nakamba are all out long term.

Liverpool vs Luton Head to Head:

The clubs have not played here since 2008 which was in the FA Cup which Liverpool easily won 5-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the game finished 1-1.

Since 2006 the teams have met each other four times and Liverpool have scored 12 goals.

Liverpool vs Luton Prediction:

Liverpool cannot let this game be one of the banana skins that some title chasing teams endure. We know how much quality the Reds have had and they have looked unbeatable at home this season. Liverpool are big odds on and we don’t expect many to go after them where every £6 placed wins you £1, in simple terms. However the value leans towards us if we back the ht/ft markets in the home teams favour and we think Liverpool will come out with purpose to get this job done quickly.

Luton have showed a lot of courage and what has been encouraging for them is that by and large they have competed well with every side once you take in their budget and lack of experience in the top flight, they will have chances in this game but Liverpool should march on here and will surely have too much quality for Rob Edwards side.
