Chelsea vs Aston Villa: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 24th September 2023
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

Here we go again for Chelsea who will need to start winning games because it is all looking like a circus act for the club for a second season in a row. Chelsea have spent £1 billion under Tom Boehly and £400m just in the summer transfer window and it doesn’t seem to have improved them one jot. They have some players out granted and perhaps the new bunch have to gel but everything seems in place and they even have Mauricio Pochettino in charge, so excuses for their bad start are wearing thin.

Last weekend the Blues didn’t lose but they didn’t win either and that was against Bournemouth as the game finished 0-0. The week before they lost at home to Nottingham Forest and the clubs only victory so far was a win over the current poorest side in the league, Luton. Still with no European football this season that could turn up to be an advantage for them as the season goes on. Currently though a peak at the league table is bleak viewing for any Chelsea fan as they are residing in 14th place and 10 points behind 1st place.

Aston Villa have started well enough considering they have lost two games but they have won three and come into this game in 7th place with 9 points. Villa’s last game almost ended in defeat at home to Crystal Palace but they stunned the Eagles by scoring 3 late goals. While Villa are scoring goals and looking overall impressive their two defeats so far have come away from home losing against both Newcastle and Liverpool.

Team News:

Chelsea: Armando Broja could be assessed after missing an extended time out but remains at 50/50 to return. Moises Caicedo has recovered from his knee injury but will be assessed for this game before a decision is made. There are no new injuries to report but the club still has a lengthy list of absentees which include Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia, Reece James, Wesley Fofana, Carney Chukwuemeka, Trevoh Chabolah and Marcus Bettinelli

Aston Villa: Bertrand Traore could miss out again but will be assessed and is 50/50 to return. Tyrone Mings is still sidelined with a knee injury. Tim Iroegbunam is out with a muscle injury, Diego Carlos is out with his hamstring and Emiliano Buendia is out until next year with a knee injury.

Chelsea vs Aston Villa Head to Head:

Last season Aston Villa won this fixture 2-0.

Chelsea have won 10 of the last 13 meetings.

There is a 60% chance to see both teams to score.

Chelsea vs Aston Villa Prediction:

Chelsea are odds on favourites to win this game but still decent value but the best value seems to be backing Aston Villa. Granted we are all waiting for that special Chelsea moment where the quality of the side should start shining through and winning games like these ones especially at home but Villa will not be an easy side to beat and remain a threat.

Chelsea simply have not looked good so far and it’s hard to count their win over Luton as anything spectacular given how poor the Hatters have been so far. Villa may have the attitude of coming into this game and travelling here with a spring in their step, they could continue to be the ultimate spoilers, have won here last season and have proven goalscorers in their team.

Chelsea vs Aston Villa Betting Tips:

Double Chance: Aston Villa win or draw at 1.91

Anytime goalscorer: Ollie Watkins at 3.00

Anytime goalscorer: Raheem Sterling at 2.50
