Kick off at 7:30pm BST
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Match Preview:
It really depends on how you view such games and results but there is no denying that Arsenal’s 0-0 draw away to Manchester City at the weekend was quite poor and truth be told, a boring game. However manager Mikel Arteta no doubt would have left the Etihad as a happy man. This is a ground where Arsenal normally lose and lose big and are usually outclassed, that didn’t happen this time and Arsenal looked more composed and mature in their play- the match may have not been the spectacle we all wanted to witness but it ended up being a decent result for the Gunners in the end.
Arsenal stay in 2nd place with 65 points and are a point clear of City and two points behind league leaders Liverpool who will play the day after and so Arsenal has the opportunity for now to go top of the table and all they have to do is beat 18th placed Luton at home- on paper this should not be a problem. If we look over the last 10 games Arsenal has managed 25 points and that is a huge return especially at this stage of the season. At home Arsenal has the 2nd best record in the league with 35 points won from 42 and they have won their last 4 games in a row here.
Luton are in the bottom three this is despite the teams just above them receiving 6 and 4 point penalties, and that is not good news for the club. However Luton come into this week on the same points as 17th placed Nottingham Forest with 22 points. Luton are not losing every week but they are not winning either. They are still able to give teams a scare though like at the weekend when they scored an early goal away to Tottenham and then frustrated them, however in the end Tottenham ran out 2-1 winners. That has been the story of Rob Edwards season with Luton they could easily have won 3-4 games but if it were not collapsing near the end of the game. The recent loss to Bournemouth after being 3-0 up at half time underlines that. The Hatters have lost 9 games away from home from 15 played and won just twice. The club has lost their last two games in a row on the road conceding 6 goals in the process.
Team News:
Arsenal: Jurrien Timber is the clubs only injury concern and he has been a long term absentee with his knee, it is unlikely he will return this season.
Luton: Reece Burke will be assessed with an Achilles injury as it is not sure the extent of his injury he picked up last weekend. Tahith Chong will be assessed as will Alfie Doughty as both players have knocks. Gabriel Osho is expected to miss out with an ongoing knee injury but may return at the weekend. Jacob Brown, Mads Andersen, Amarii Bell, Marvelous Nakamaba, Tom Lockyer, Daniel Potts, Chiedozie Ogbene and Albert Sambi-Lokonga are all out long term.
Arsenal vs Luton Head to Head:
It’s been 33 years since Luton played Arsenal away- which of course was a different ground as Arsenal won 2-0.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the teams played out a seven goal thriller with Arsenal winning 4-3.
Arsenal vs Luton Prediction:
Luton might go down and they have lost plenty of games but you have to give the club some respect, they have hardly suffered any terrible losses and perhaps at the beginning of the season we were all guilty for thinking that Edwards side were going to get battered week in and week out. In reality the players have dug deep and with what they have they have actually impressed at times. However, Luton now come to the Emirates in an evening game in which this will feel like a cup final for Arsenal- they know they must win and put in a good performance and they come here with a full strength side and 60,000 fans screaming them on- we only see a victory for Arsenal and if they can score early this could be one of those games where the floodgates open. This isn’t to disrespect Luton but this is a big game they will be involved in and they have many many injuries now as the season comes into its final stride home, we expect this to be a very difficult evening for Luton.
