A Look at the Next Manchester United Manager Odds

The race to be the next Manchester United manager is on. After a disastrous 2023-24 season filled with injuries, inconsistent form, and chaotic tactics, everyone in the football world expects Erik Ten Hag to bow out after the FA Cup final against Manchester City. And with INEOS boss Jim Ratcliffe now at the helm after successfully purchasing a 25% stake in Manchester United for $1.3 billion, you can expect the club to make a big statement with their next managerial appointment.

There are currently some big-name managers on the market. Naturally, a large number of these managers are starting to get linked with the up-coming Manchester United vacancy. Here's a closer look at who the current bookie's favourites are to replace Erik Ten Hag.

Favourites to Be the Next Manchester United Manager

2/1 Thomas Tuchel

3/1 Gareth Southgate

5/1 Graham Potter

11/1 Roberto De Zerbi

12/1 Zinidine Zidane

Currently, Thomas Tuchel is the leading favourite to be the next Manchester United manager. Back in February 2024, Bayern Munich announced that Thomas Tuchel will officially leave the club at the end of the season after a disappointing campaign, which has seen Bayern's 11-year title-winning run come to an end at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen. Ultimately, this has opened the door for Thomas Tuchel to make a Premier League return in the summer with Manchester United, having previously managed Chelsea from 2021 to 2022. What remains to be seen, though, is if Tuchel is truly the right long-term fit for Manchester United.

Next is current England manager Gareth Southgate. Rumours of a potential Southgate appointment started at the beginning of 2024, with many journalists reporting that he will leave the England job to replace Ten Hag after the season comes to an end. However, the speculation surrounding Southgate led to a huge backlash from Manchester United fans, with many of them questioning whether Southgate has the charisma, tactical nous, or trophy-winning capabilities to be the manager of such an iconic club. Since then, Southgate has remained one of the top favourites for the job but is subsequently no longer the favourite. Whether he's appointed or not will depend largely on England's upcoming EURO 2024 campaign, where England are the 3/1 favourites to win.

Other big names on Manchester United's shortlist include Graham Potter, Roberto De Zerbi, and even Zinidine Zidane. With Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi, you have two managers that are still relatively unproven. Potter struggled at Chelsea before eventually being sacked while De Zerbi has had an underwhelming season with Brighton, so the odds of either becoming the next Manchester United boss are low. When it comes to Zidane, the former three-time Champions League winning Real Madrid manager is said to be uninterested in the job and would prefer to join a club with a greater level of stability.

Thomas Frank, Kieran McKenna, and Michael Carrick are outliers to replace Ten Hag. Thomas Frank has been extremely successful with Brentford but has never managed a top European side before. Kieran McKenna and Michael Carrick previously worked as assistants under Ole Gunnar Solskjær while he was Manchester United manager but (much like Thomas Frank) are lacking in big job experience.

Will Ten Hag Leave Manchester United?

Although nothing is official yet, Ten Hag is fully expected to leave Manchester United in the summer after facing Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup final. During his time with the club, Ten Hag has won the Carabao Cup, reached two FA Cup finals, and also finished third in the Premier League. However, his stint with Manchester United has been plagued by injuries, bust-ups with high-profile players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho, and inconsistent results. Now that INEOS are onboard and want to make a huge statement, it seems almost inevitable that Ten Hag will be walking out the exit door.
