Newcastle vs Sheffield Utd: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 27th April 2024
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

Newcastle quite rightly still have their eyes set on a European finish and despite losing in midweek against Crystal Palace they have every chance to achieve this. Newcastle are in seventh place coming into this weekend and form had really stabilised until the loss away to Palace but the club will be happy to return home where in their last game they were able to thrash Tottenham 4-0. Newcastle have not been convincing away from home but at home this is where their season has really been quite a success and they would be in 5th place based on home form alone which has seen 11 wins and just three defeats. They have managed to win 3 of their last four games here too and remain unbeaten at home for over three months.

Sheffield United may well be officially relegated this weekend, but even if that doesn’t happen they are going to go down it just hasn’t been confirmed yet. They did battle well in midweek away to Manchester United where they found themselves in front not once but twice but ended up losing 4-2 in the end. That was the Blades 24th defeat of the season. Chris Wilder’s side have shipped 8 goals in their last two games and that does not bode well to go to Newcastle’s ground with that record. The club are 10 points from safety with four games remaining and are seven points adrift of 19th

Team News:

Newcastle: Nick Pope is not due back for two weeks because of an on going shoulder injury. Kieran Trippier misses out with a calf injury, Miguel Almiron will miss out but could be back next week and be assessed due to his knee injury. Joelinton, Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Lewis Miley, Joseph Willock and Matt Targett are all out long term and all will miss the rest of the season. Sandro Tonali is suspended for the season

Sheffield United: James Mcatee is only 50/50 to return due to a groin injury. Jack Robinson could be assessed but is struggling with his ankle and may not be risked. Tom Davies has a lack of match fitness and is only 50/50 to make this game. Jayden Bogle is more hopeful with his calf to be fine and he will be assessed. Oliver McBurnie is out for the season with a groin injury. George Baldock, Chris Basham, Rhian Brewster, Rhys Norrington-Davies, John Egan and Max Lowe are all out long term.

Newcastle vs Sheffield Utd Head to Head:

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Sheffield United will not forget the result in a hurry as they were demolished 8-0.

Seven of the last 8 fixtures have seen Newcastle victories.

It’s been 18 years since Sheffield United beat Newcastle away from home.

Newcastle vs Sheffield Utd Prediction:

With due respect to Sheffield United because despite them being last in the league they have fought well in many games, but we believe Newcastle has the chance to replicate the earlier result where they managed to score 8 goals. That may not happen and of course the odds would be against it but we could see the Magpies scoring quite a few goals here and that is what we should be basing our choices on because the home side are of no value at short odds to win here.

All of the motivation is with the home side and if they can score early we expect the floodgates to open. We still think the Blades can play their part and they have little to lose now so why not? However Newcastle should be winning this and winning it well when a lacklustre Manchester United side can put 4 goals past Sheffield United we expect Newcastle who have looked, for the most part, brilliant at home to score quite a few goals.

Newcastle vs Sheffield Utd Betting Tips:

Over 3.5 goals at 1.80

First goalscorer: Callum Wilson at 4.00

Anytime goalscorer: Alexander Isak at 1.60

Newcastle to score 3+ goals at 1.64
