Liverpool vs Crystal Palace: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 14th April 2024
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

Even though the media have been lenient on Liverpool, let’s face facts, in midweek we witnessed one of the biggest European shocks in recent memory when Liverpool lost 3-0 at home to Italians Atalanta. Liverpool were expected to win the Europa League in what would have been Jurgen Klopp’s last game in charge of the Reds, instead they were poor against a side who are only sixth in their league. A hatful of Italian teams have come to Anfield in the past and been blown away and Atalanta were meant to join that group- this was a significant loss and Klopp will be hoping that his side are not facing the after effects of it when they take on Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The loss to Atalanta was Liverpool’s first defeat at home this season but of course in the league they have been superb here picking up 42 points from a possible 48 and the Reds have the best home record in the league. From their last five games here they have won 13 points and only dropped points against Manchester City. With City winning on Saturday the Reds are obliged to win this game as they come here 2 points adrift.

Crystal Palace are not safe yet with 30 points and they have only managed to pick up 2 points from their last 15. Manager Oliver Glasner has not started well for the Eagles but he will argue that he needs a summer transfer window to be judged properly. Palace come into this game after losing two games in a row, one to Manchester City could be expected but they have also lost against Bournemouth. The Eagles would go past Brentford if they could repeat the Atalanta trick.

Team News:

Liverpool: Alisson will be checked out for fitness issues but could return. Joel Matip, Ben Doak and Thiago Alcantara are all out long term.

Crystal Palace: Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and Jairo Riedewald will be assessed both for fitness issues but have a chance to make this game in some capacity. Marc Guehi is out with a knee injury but could return in two weeks, Chris Richards is missing with a knock and is about 10 days away from a return. Matheus Franca, Rob Holding, Sam Johnstone and Chieck Doucoure are all out long term.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace Prediction:

At 1.20 Liverpool are no value at all. Granted they should win but Crystal Palace will not make this game easy at all. Jurgen Klopp needs to see a response there is so little between his side, Manchester City and Arsenal that even a draw could start to make anyone associated with the club panic. Make no mistake Liverpool will also be thinking about their 2nd leg match next week and whilst that game looks well and truly ever, with Liverpool you just never know. Liverpool will have to dig deep and we think they will win the game, maybe they will go on a free scoring run in the end like City did on Saturday- so it is best to back goals in this game to bring in the value. Palace haven’t been giving us much lately and have a poor record over Liverpool and we expect this to continue on Sunday away from home.
