Wolves vs Sheffield Utd: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 17th April 2021
Kick off at 8:15pm BST
Venue: Molineux Stadium

Match Preview:

A reduced fixture list because of the FA Cup semi-finals means that there are just two games to be played on Saturday in the Premier League.

In fairness this fixture could feel like an end of season game. The problem is that Wolves are safe but are not going to be good enough for a Europa League finish and talking of finished, Sheffield United are. Within the next week it will surely be confirmed of their relegation, Newcastle only need 4 points and the Blades would have to win every other game, it just isn’t going to happen.

Wolves will feel disappointed by their season but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a strong finish and they will fancy their chances to win this game. They are 12th place but are six points behind Aston Villa in 11th. Last weekend came a welcome first win after a month of football when they beat Fulham 1-0 and at home Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have won just five times. Indeed home form needs to improve given that the club come into this game having lost back to back encounters here.

Sheffield United are rock bottom and are even 10 points adrift of 19th placed West Bromwich Albion. They lost 3-0 at home to Arsenal last weekend and they have lost their last 4 games. With 13 defeats away from home the Blades have the worst away record in the league and with 30 goals conceded on the road they are shipping 2 goals per game.

The Blades would be lucky to even get to the 20 point marker and there will surely be huge changes at the club over the summer as they will have to prepare for life back in the Championship.

Team News:

Wolves: Willy Boly was self isolating from Covid-19 and is expected to be available for the fixture. Jonny is out for the rest of the season with his knee injury. Marcal is training again after his groin injury, but this game might come too soon for him. Pedro Neto has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury. Raul Jimenez has finally recovered from his head injury earlier in the season and is awaiting clearance from doctors. He could take some part in this game but that is still unclear, he is expected back at one point this month though. Ruben Neves has Covid-19 and is unavailable.

Sheffield United: Chris Basham has been ruled out of this game with his ongoing knock but is being tipped to be fine for next week. Sander Berge has a lack of match fitness and could return next week. John Fleck will be assessed because of his groin injury. Olivier McBurnie has been ruled out for the season with a foot injury. Billy Sharp has been ruled out for the season with a thigh injury. Jack Robinson and Jack O’Connell have ongoing injuries and are ruled out again for this match with a knee and knock injury respectively.

Wolves vs Sheffield Utd Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended 1-1.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Wolves won 2-0.

There is an 80% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Wolves vs Sheffield Utd Prediction:

What we have here is two teams whose seasons are effectively over and come into this game with lots of key injuries. In a way there is no clear advantage with either side quality wise despite the points difference, though Wolves will be happy at least not to travel.

This is a good time to play Wolves however one has to wonder about the motivation of Sheffield United. They can play with freedom and take risks now but at the same time no club wants to get thrashed. Of course so many key players are out for Wolves that probably won’t happen anyway. This fixture has a history of low scoring and to be fair this game seems set up for that again and we will look into this market as we expect a close contest that may not be the most entertaining of the weekend.
