West Ham vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 23rd May 2021
Kick off at 4pm BST
Venue: London Stadium

Match Preview:

West Ham have almost made Europe and they come into this game in sixth place with 62 points. Their 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion in the week was of high importance and they have gone three points clear of 7th. All the Hammers would need is a draw to confirm their qualification for the Europa League and that would be a huge achievement for the club.

However if the Hammers lose this game and Tottenham were to beat Leicester then David Moyes side would have to qualify for the Europa League and that can be a tricky path. Form is decent but has question marks and the Hammers have been dropping points right at the wrong time. At home the club will feel they are due a win as they have lost their last two in a row against Chelsea and then Everton.

Southampton are likely playing for 13th place and they lost 2-0 in their last game against Leeds. Before then they beat Fulham and Crystal Palace though and even though the Saints have been particularly poor in the second half of the season they are a team, who when they click can remain a danger.

On the road the Saints have the 3rd to worst record and have won just 4 times and have lost their last 4 away games. With 40 goals conceded that is the most for any club away from home.

Team News:

West Ham: Lukasz Fabianski has a knee injury but hasn’t be ruled out of this game and will be assessed. Manuel Lanzini is set to miss this game with a thigh injury.

Southampton: Che Adams has a groin injury and is out. Ryan Bertrand is out with a calf injury.

West Ham vs Southampton Head to Head:

West Ham beat Southampton 3-1 in last seasons fixture.

It’s been seven league meetings since Southampton beat West Ham.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the game finished 0-0.

There is a 70% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

West Ham vs Southampton Prediction:

West Ham are a decent price to win this game and even though they have wobbled a little lately they bounced back last week and showed mental strength to come back against West Bromwich Albion as they were losing that game.

The Hammers have something to play for, are at home, will have their fans behind them and historically have brilliant results over Southampton, so we will certainly be tipping the Hammers to win this match.

The value on goalscorers is open too and some players such as Michail Antonio and Jesse Lingard have really stood out for the Hammers and this being the last game at home we think they should be taken on.
