West Ham vs Chelsea: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 4th December 2021
Kick off at 12:30pm GMT
Venue: London Stadium

Match Preview:

This London derby kicks off the 15th Premier League games and what a match this should be. West Ham are the inferior side but they are a different West Ham to the club we are used to and have performed alarmingly well.

Having said that, the Hammers come into this game with no wins in their last 3 games, with defeats against Wolves and Manchester City, and a draw against Brighton in midweek. It is worth noting that their two recent losses came away from home. Against Brighton the Hammers were all set for a narrow win but were pegged back at the end in what would have been a frustrating draw for the club.

The reality of the situation for David Moyes side is that the top 3 are escaping them and there is now a 7 point difference. But the objective for the Hammers will be that 4th place spot and the chance to play in the Champions League.

Chelsea are steaming ahead and they had to dig deep in midweek to beat Watford 2-1, that was the team’s 10th victory of the season from their 14 games played so far. Chelsea have only conceded 6 goals this season and despite their great start to the season they only have a one point lead over Manchester City and a two point lead over Liverpool, so a lot can change this weekend.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have the best away record in the league with 19 points won from a possible 21 and they are the only side who is unbeaten on the road. They come into this encounter having won their last 5 away games.

Team News:

West Ham: Aaron Cresswell has a back injury but he is being tipped to be ready for this game though will face an assessment. Angelo Ogbonna is out long term with his knee injury.

Chelsea: Trevor Chalobah looks set to miss out with a hamstring injury sustained in the game vs Watford. Reece James has a knock and will be assessed. N’Golo Kante hasn’t played for the last 10 days with a knee injury and is only 50/50 to make this game. Mateo Kovacic (hamstring) and Ben Chilwell (knee) are both ruled out.

West Ham vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Chelsea won both league meetings last season with this one at the London Stadium ending in a 1-0 victory.

West Ham have won four games from the last 10 against Chelsea.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

West Ham vs Chelsea Prediction:

In the past decade these games have been incredibly close affairs and that is interesting given the gulf in quality of the squads. But this is a London derby and West Ham have never had trouble upping their game against the very top teams and we shouldn’t see any different at the weekend.

If we want to know what we could expect from the Hammers just look at how they ended Liverpool’s unbeaten season with a 3-2 victory here. There is value to be had in the home side to come through this one also, though of course Chelsea remain a threat.

What has been impressive with West Ham is their lack of injuries too and compared to when Moyes was not at the club it has been a miracle of sorts, everything is pointing in the right direction for the club, so we will back the home side which should offer a good level of safety.
