West Brom vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Monday 12th April 2021
Kick off at 6pm BST
Venue: The Hawthorns

Match Preview:

West Bromwich Albion will come into this game with a spring in their step after beating Chelsea 5-2 last weekend. There will be a belief that Sam Allardyce’s side could actually stay up, although it still seems like that would be a miracle as they are nearly 10 points behind 17th place.

No one was expecting the Baggies to put 5 goals past Chelsea, even a ten man Chelsea. A surprise win can happen but the way it happened must have given Allardyce pause for thought and if his players can perform like they did against the Blues then the Baggies should have very little problems in obtaining 3 points on Monday evening. Of course football is very rarely that simple.

West Brom have 21 points and first they must chase down Fulham who have 26, this isn’t a lost cause given that they have 2 games in hand over Scott Parker’s side. The Baggies have only won 4 games so far and at home they have earned 11 points from a possible 45.

Southampton are in 14th place and have 36 points, and last weekend they came back from 2 goals down to beat Burnley 3-2. With Fulham losing at the weekend the Saints are surely safe now and have a 10 point advantage over the bottom three. The fight back last weekend would have been welcomed and shows that at least with the bottom half teams, this team can find a way to win even if there season overall has been underwhelming.

Away from home Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team has been poor with 7 defeats and that includes a recent run that has seen the club lose 4 of their last 5 games. The Saints last away game ended in 5-2 loss to Manchester City.

Team News:

West Bromwich Albion: Kieran Gibbs has an ongoing neck injury and is only 50/50 to make this game. Branislav Ivanovic has a hamstring injury and is ruled out and could be out for some time. Dara O’Shea had an ankle injury but is being tipped to be fine for this game.

Southampton: Michael Obafemi could miss the rest of the season with a muscle injury. Oriol Romeu and William Smallbone are both out for the rest of the season. Kyle Walker-Peters will be assessed with a minor leg injury.

West Brom vs Southampton Head to Head:

Last season this fixture produced 5 goals as Southampton won it 3-2.

Southampton have won the last 5 meetings in a row.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

West Brom vs Southampton Prediction:

It sounds cliche but every game now is a cup final for West Bromwich Albion. They will probably go down this season but one can think that it won’t be without a fight. This is a tricky game for the Baggies though and their recent form against the Saints has not been good.

Southampton will take joy in that comeback over Burnley last weekend but their away form has been poor and if they let the Baggies control the pace of this game then it could go away from them.

The two teams are fairly equal if we can forget for a moment that 15 points separates them, solely coming into this game there isn’t really anything between them. Therefore we feel it may be best to target the goals markets for this game, as there looks to be some good value.
