Wales vs Denmark: Preview and Prediction

European Championships 2020
Saturday 26th June 2021
Kick off at 5pm BST
Venue: Johan Cruijff Arena

Match Preview:

Wales are continuing to make an impact on the international stage once again like when they reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016, and they would love to go one better. In reality they would be delighted just to win this one and make it to the quarter finals, it would really lay down a marker.

For Wales the attention of course goes to Gareth Bale, their best player and arguably one of the very best Welsh players of all time. But Kieffer Moore has looked a danger up front and this Wales side look better than five years ago. In the group stage Wales did lose to Italy who also rang the changes, so it is easy to see that Wales do have limitations. However they impressively beat a good Turkey side and also came back to draw 1-1 against Switzerland. These matches would have all been potential banana skins a few years ago and there is no doubt that Wales have reached another level since then.

Denmark have qualified for the knock out stages for only the 2nd time at the European Championships. Maybe that means the other teams should be very afraid since the last time was in 1992 and the Danes went on to win that competition in stunning fashion. This has of course been a tremendously difficult tournament for the nation after Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch and really all thoughts are with him. Thankfully Eriksen is getting better and so are his team who started the campaign off with two defeats and were heading out. However Denmark sorted themselves out and rallied and beat Russia 4-1 in their final game to actually qualify in 2nd place and never needed the back door of finishing 3rd which was a nice surprise for them.

Team News:

Wales: There were a few changes made for their final group game but the news filtering through is that the team will revert back to the starting line ups of their first two games.

Denmark: Simon Kjaer has a muscle injury but is being tipped to be fine.

Wales vs Denmark Head to Head:

The nations have played each other 10 times and Denmark have 6 wins.

The teams have never drawn against each other.

The last match took place in 2018 in the UEFA Nation League where Denmark playing away from home won 2-1.

There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Wales vs Denmark Prediction:

Will fear grip Denmark? The nation changed tactics against Russia with three at the back and won 4-1. But three at the back in a knock out against Wales, could that be risky with Bale on the opposing team? Perhaps Denmark should not over think the situation after all it really did look like they would be exiting the competition early, and they must be delighted just to have made it to the knock outs.

Wales need to enjoy themselves but make no mistake this looks like it could be a very even game, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this match go into extra time. Historcially Denmark have Wales’ number (just) and there are not usually many goals in these fixtures and this match could well play out in that way.

It might be better to forget 90 minutes here and back the winners to qualify instead in case there is extra time and/or penalties. This will be a very nervous and tense game for both sets of fans. To note the Danes’ price to qualify is odds on and not very attractive so some punters may want to take that extra risk and back them to win in 90 minutes which is around 1.80.

Wales vs Denmark Betting Tips:

Denmark to qualify for next round at 1.44
