Tottenham vs Southampton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 6th August 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Match Preview:

Last season Tottenham achieved their goal under Antonio Conte and that was finishing in a top 4 place and qualifying for the Champions League. No mean feat given that the club they denied was their all time rival Arsenal. So things are looking good for the north Londoners but of course now Conte’s objective will be to improve on last season.

The club didn’t mess around when the transfer window opened and purchased Richarlison from Everton for £50m, the experienced Ivan Perisic has come in from Inter Milan on a free. Yves Bissouma was bought for £25m from Brighton. The good news is that all major players stay and there is no Harry Kane saga will he or won’t he leave this summer. Though to balance the books Steven Bergwijn was sold to Ajax for £26m. Tottenham certainly look powerful going forward and of course the window still has another 3 weeks left by the time we kick off the new season.

Notable friendly results seen the club draw 1-1 against Sevilla and beat Rangers at Ibrox 2-1 after trailing in that game. Their last game took place in Israel and they lost 1-0 to Roma.

Southampton have brought in six new players mostly youngsters and if these ones kick on it will be seen as good business. Take the 18 year old bought from Manchester City, Romeo Lavia, who just can’t get a place at the champions, it is these type of deals that may well serve the Saints good in the long run. The Saints haven’t lost any key players as of yet but their pre-season has seen just one victory 5, although it did come against Monaco in a 3-1 win. The Saints lost their last friendly game at home to Villarreal though, they also drew 0-0 with Watford last month.

Team News:

Tottenham: Richarlison is suspended for one game for a breach of FA rules. Oliver Skipp will be assessed due to a slight leg injury.

Southampton: Nathan Tella has a knee injury and is ruled out. Theo Walcott has a muscle injury with no set return date and is ruled out. Valentino Livramento has a knee injury from last season and is expected to miss the rest of 2022.

Tottenham vs Southampton Head to Head:

Last season Tottenham lost this fixture 3-2, it was the clubs first defeat against the Saints in seven games.

For 6 meetings in a row this fixture has seen both teams to score.

Though Southampton won at Tottenham last season it was the clubs first victory away to them in six years.

There is a 70% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Tottenham vs Southampton Prediction:

There were times last season when Tottenham tested the patience of Antonio Conte to the point where the Italian went through the press to say he might not be the right manager- this was only after 3 months of being in charge. It was born out of frustration as Conte understands he has a team that should be finding consistency, and this season he will expect to see his side go up a level, and not get shock defeats, or at least less of them.

That form has to start at home and Tottenham will be the favourites to win this game. It is a shame that Richarlison can’t play in this game so we can get some questions answered, will the Brazilian be subjected to substitute appearances in the wake of Kane and Heung-Min Son on the pitch? Will Conte go all out attack? We will know very soon, but not this weekend.

Southampton are capable of losing this game by a high score or surprising their hosts, this is the Saints in a nutshell. To be brutally honest though not too many will be convinced so far by their transfer activity and this could be a very good game for Tottenham with quite a few goals.

Tottenham vs Southampton Betting Tips:
