Tottenham vs Aston Villa: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 3rd October 2021
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Match Preview:

After their bright start which included beating Manchester City, Tottenham have lost 3 games in a row. Last weekend highlighted everything that is wrong with the club as their derby with Arsenal was effectively over by half time, they lost that 3-1 in the end.

Tottenham are only 5 points behind the league leaders but have dropped to 11th place, and alongside Watford and Norwich they have the worst form in the league. It must be a concern to the club that they have conceded 9 goals in their last 3 games but there was some joy in the week as they won in the Conference League. Tottenham beat Mura easily winning 5-1 at home and Harry Kane who has been shooting blanks in he Premier League scored a hat-trick. Cynics will point out that Mura is hardly a bar to elevate from, which is true but the club would have welcomed a good win and for his confidence scoring goals will always be welcomed by Kane.

Aston Villa have won two games in a row and beaten quality in Everton and Manchester United. Everton were disposed of 3-0 and United were outplayed at home in one of Villa’s best performances under Dean Smith. Villa will certainly come into this game with a lot of confidence and pose a tricky game for the hosts. The visitors have moved up 8th place and are one point ahead of Tottenham. On the road Villa have already lost to Chelsea and Watford but after their recent win one has to wonder if the team are clicking now?

Team News:

Tottenham: Steven Bergwijn has an ankle injury and has been sidelined for some weeks, he is set to miss this encounter too. Ben Davies is out with a muscle issue. Ryan Sessegon is a major doubt with a knock.

Aston Villa: Leon Bailey is out for another two weeks due to his thigh injury. Morgan Sanson won’t return for another 3 weeks at least with a hamstring injury. Trezeguet is out long term with his knee.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa Head to Head:

Tottenham lost 2-1 to Aston Villa last season in this fixture.

However Tottenham have won 6 from the last 7 meetings between the clubs.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Harry Kane has scored 3 goals against Villa in their last four meetings.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa Prediction:

The victory over Mura in midweek will not have convinced some fans that Nuno Espirito Santo is the right man for their club. When you’re winning of course everything is fine but 3 defeats in a row for a club who have the ambition of finishing in the top 4 is worrying. A fourth defeat would sound the alarms and the pressure cooker will get turned up.

It really depends what type of Villa team Tottenham will face. Villa can be unpredictable but despite winning here last season they do not have a great record away to Tottenham. The home side remain frustrating because they have some brilliant players and both Kane and Heung-Min Son up front really need to transfer their form from the cup games into domestic ones, they are the key here because Tottenham have just 4 goals so far this season and that isn’t good enough.

Tottenham will be the favourites but Villa are on a high right now and if they can keep the scores level in the early stages there is no reason to think they can’t come away with a point or maybe more.
