Southampton vs Liverpool: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Southampton will be the underdogs when these two teams meet on Tuesday evening as the season nears to its end. The Saints are safe and have looked so for a few months but it was confirmed at the weekend as Leeds failed to beat Brighton.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are in 15th place and have 40 points and their recent form has been poor with no wins in their last four games and 3 of those have ended in defeats coming against Burnley, Crystal Palace and Brentford. It has felt as if the Saints players have lost a few gears and we would have to go back to mid April since they last won and it was against Arsenal of all teams.

As it stands 25 of Southampton’s 40 points have come at home, the clubs majority of results here have ended in draws with seven from 18 games played but their recent home record will be a worry with four defeats from their last five. That included the 6-0 hammering at the hands of Chelsea.

Liverpool won their 2nd trophy of the season this past weekend with an FA Cup win over Chelsea. The game finished 0-0 and it had to come down to penalties but the Reds dream of the quadruple is still on as they upset Chelsea for the second time this season after beating them by the same method in the Carabao Cup. It’s incredible to think that Liverpool have only lost 2 games so far and yet are not in 1st place. The Reds come into this game four points behind leaders Manchester City but have two games left to play, and if they win this game it all comes down to the final game of the season.

Liverpool have been in terrific form but their recent 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham may well settle this title. From a possible 54 points Liverpool have won 40 away from home and their last result on the road ended in a 2-1 victory against Aston Villa, after trailing in that game.

Team News:

Southampton: There are no new injuries coming into this game for the Saints.

Liverpool: Virgil van Dijk remains a doubt with a calf strain he picked up but could be assessed. Mohamed Salah is only 50/50 to play here due to a muscle injury and may not make it. Fabinho is almost certainly out of this game with a muscle injury.

Southampton vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season Southampton won this fixture 1-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Liverpool won 4-0.

From the last 9 meetings Liverpool have won 8 of them.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Southampton vs Liverpool Prediction:

Not many people are giving Southampton a chance here and are instead looking at the final day of the season. It is what the TV companies want to come down to the last game but one wonders if Southampton can upset Klopp’s team. It isn’t just a shock home win that would do it, as even a draw would more or less mean that City are champions because of the goal difference which is currently plus 7 in City’s favour. Could Liverpool vastly reduce that? Southampton have infamously lost 9-0 a few times in the last couple of seasons against Manchester United and at home to Leicester, how Liverpool would love that to take out their goal difference.

The Reds will also have to recover from a hangover one would expect from their FA Cup win and perhaps this game being played a day later would have suited them more. Shocks can happen but Liverpool are a far superior side facing a team out of form and safe, and we think this is a game where the Saints will be trying to keep the score low. So while we think Liverpool will get the win we don’t expect to see too many goals here.
