Match Preview:
Southampton have had a mixed start to the season with the majority of their results ending in draws. The Saints have had 4 so far from their opening 8 games. It’s been a slow start for them and that is reflected in their current placing of 15th.
It’s been 5 points earned from the last 15 for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side but they did win their last game, which came against Leeds in a 1-0 win. A significant result of course as it was the Saints first victory of the season, though being just 4 points from the bottom three they will want to pick up 3 points this weekend.
At home Southampton have lost just one game and 5 of their seven points so far have come in front of their home fans.
Burnley are in 18th place and have no wins so far but they did earn some praise last weekend even if they lost. It came away to Manchester City a team who had beaten them 5-0 twice in a row. This match finished only 2-0 and Burnley did try and make it as difficult as possible for the defending champions.
Before the City defeat Burnley had managed two draws in a row so couple all of that together and it’s possible that Sean Dyche’s team are just getting a tad better. On the road the Clarets have the 2nd to worse record with 1 point earned from a possible 12. With 9 goals conceded they are shipping 2 goals per game.
If Burnley were able to win this game and get a decent score and Leeds lost it is worth noting that they would climb out of the bottom three and exchange places with Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Team News:
Southampton: James Ward-Prowse is suspended and won’t be back until the end of the month. Jack Stephens still has a knee injury and isn’t due back for 5-6 weeks
Burnley: Ben Mee will be assessed due to a lack of match fitness, and could play. Charlie Taylor and Matej Vydra both had knocks and will be assessed.

This was a fixture that Burnley have more or less dominated over the past decade, however Southampton won both games last season. The form side out of the two of them of course is Southampton and being at home will also be an advantage.
It’s a big question though if we will see such an entertaining game of last season’s 3-2 victory for the Saints. Here we have two sides who have 1 win between them this season and that could make for a game of few chances.
