Southampton vs Brighton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 4th December 2021
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Southampton were involved in an enjoyable game in midweek as they drew 2-2 at home to Leicester and that draw at least stopped a losing run of two games. The Saints will hope to use the point over Leicester as a springboard to getting back on track as they currently sit in 15th place.

The Saints have shown some promise this season but should be reminded that they are only 5 points from the bottom three. At home the Saints would be in 9th place and in fact have only lost once here, that defeat coming against Wolves. Four of their seven matches at home have ended in draws and the Saints are unbeaten at home in their last four games stretching back to the end of September.

Brighton seem to be West Ham’s bogey team and it happened again in midweek as Graham Potter’s side snatched a late equaliser against the Hammers. It means that Brighton have lost just once in their past five games although the other four matches have ended in draws. The club are doing well though and are in 9th place and just 5 points from a top four position. However Southampton could close the gap down to just 1 point with victory here.

On the road Brighton have just one defeat which came recently against Aston Villa and they have won 10 points from a possible 21.

Team News:

Southampton: Stuart Armstrong is out with a calf injury, Jan Bednarek has the same injury though presently it is thought not to be serious and he could be involved in this game, certainly he will face a test.

Brighton: Steven Alzate is out long term with his ankle injury. Adam Lallana is out with a muscle injury. Jeremy Sarmiento has a muscle injury and whilst it isn’t thought to be too long until he returns he has been ruled out of this match. Adam Webster is out with a muscle issue. Danny Welbeck is out long term with his hamstring injury.

Southampton vs Brighton Head to Head:

Brighton won this fixture last season with a score of 2-1 that was Brighton’s first win over Southampton in 9 games.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals although the last two meetings have finished with the correct score line of 2-1.

It’s been 11 years since these teams played out a 0-0 game.

Southampton vs Brighton Prediction:

Southampton have not been in great form and Brighton have been dogged and that has to be respected. However the Saints have an excellent record over Brighton. What is telling is that both of these teams have jointly drawn 13 games and this game could well end in the same way.

There is little between the teams and we expect to see a closely fought contest. A draw is tempting but as always can be risky but it might be worth backing that result for the half time market.

For price value let’s look into the correct score. The bottom line when considering the outcome of this game is we have two teams that can dig deep and be stubborn and we don’t expect to see much goal action in a game that could well be played mostly in the middle of the field.
