Southampton vs Aston Villa: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 21st January 2023
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Are the Saints about to go on a good run? If so it would be perfect timing given that they are bottom of the league but that is only on goal difference and some positive results could really change their season around.

Nathan Jones side first stunned and knocked out Manchester City from the EFL Cup and then followed that up by winning their 3rd away game of the season as they beat Everton 2-1 with a last minute free kick. These are good times for the club but they will need that belief and to hold on to it if they want to remain consistent, a win would take them off the bottom though and that has to be the motivation here.

Aston Villa are in good form and under Unai Emery they have been able to turn it around. They have climbed up to 11th place and have earned 10 points from their last 15. With 25 points the club do not look in any danger at all and Emery has to be given credit for that. In their last game they beat Leeds 2-1 and the Villains have been able to go their last 3 games undefeated. Their last away game finished in a fantastic 2-0 victory at Tottenham and they will understand that they need maximum points in Emery’s ‘honeymoon period’ to try and finish in the top half of the table. Currently Villa are a full 10 points in front of their opponents.

Last season Southampton won this fixture 1-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Aston Villa won 1-0.

3 out of the last four meetings has only seen one side to score.

Southampton vs Aston Villa Prediction:

First it should be noted that Danny Ings has been sold to West Ham and normally one could think that is a blow for a club like Aston Villa, not so though as Ings hasn’t been scoring many goals and reports have suggested that he hasn’t got on with the new manager Emery, so both parties will be happy with that outcome. Villa will feel confident about themselves coming into this game and they have won the last two meetings although both were at home.

No one team has dominated this fixture and it has been fairly equal in recent years. We could witness a very interesting game and to take full advantage of that we should look into all the markets because there really is a lot of value in this game, that goes back to how equal the sides are seen even if Villa are having the better season it is never easy to play away in the Premier League.
