Newcastle vs West Ham: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 17th April 2021
Kick off at 12:30pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

The Saturday lunch time kick off will see two teams play each other who have different objectives, one is to stay in the Premier League the other is to qualify for the Champions League.

West Ham are 23 points to the better of Newcastle, which is ironic if we rewind back to the start of the season where Newcastle eased to a 2-0 win over the Hammers in London and looked good for it. But West Ham have had a terrific season, their best in a generation where they haven’t had any poor periods and they will have to go again and give it their best shot at the weekend.

David Moyes side have 55 points and as 3rd place Leicester are not playing this weekend in the league because of their FA Cup semi-final match with Southampton, West Ham would go 3rd with victory here. Last weekend the Hammers beat Leicester 3-2 and have gone their last 3 games unbeaten.

Newcastle are edging to survival and have gone 6 points clear of 18th placed Fulham and they have a game in hand. The Magpies won only their 8th game of the season last weekend as they beat Burnley 2-1. It’s not always been pretty to watch Steve Bruce’s team but they are picking up points and have only lost once in their last five games. The Magpies have drawn their last 3 in a row at home and have remained undefeated here since losing to Crystal Palace 10 weeks ago.

Team News:

Newcastle: Ryan Fraser is a doubt again with his groin injury. Jamaal Lascelles is out with his foot, Isaac Hayden is out for the season with a knee injury.

West Ham: Michail Antonio could be assessed but looks like he will miss out again as he has a muscle injury. Aaron Cresswell faces a late test on his hamstring and is 50/50 to make this game. Mark Noble has an arm injury but could recover for this match. Declan Rice isn’t expected back until the end of the month following his knee injury. Andriy Yarmolenko is out long term with his knee injury.

Newcastle vs West Ham Head to Head:

Last season Newcastle won this fixture 3-2.

Newcastle have won 6 of the past 10 meetings.

It’s been 4 games since West Ham recorded their last victory over Newcastle back in 2019.

5 of the last 7 fixtures has seen over 2.5 goals.

Newcastle vs West Ham Prediction:

West Ham are the better side but the worry is that there injuries are slowly building up, still to give the Hammers credit they keep digging deep and producing the results. On paper and on form West Ham should win this game but Newcastle are fighting hard and have become quite difficult to beat at home.

The Magpies have performed well in recent games over the Hammers too and could be the perfect banana skin for them. We don’t see Moyes side losing but this could be a frustrating weekend for the away side. If Newcastle can keep the scores low by half time they have a chance to cause a minor upset because this West Ham side usually start very bright and tire in the second half. Therefore we will back the away side but also cover the draw on the refund.
