Newcastle vs West Ham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 4th February 2023
Kick off at 5:30pm GMT
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

Right off the bat this is a fixture that tells us distance is a problem from south to north for West Ham and they are also facing one of the best sides in the league. Of course David Moyes has a stay of execution given his side beat Everton in their last game by 2-0 that meant that Everton manager Frank Lampard was sacked while Moyes lived to see another day but this challenge at the weekend represents a huge problem for the Scotsman.

Newcastle have still only lost one game so far in the Premier League and they are now dreaming of Champions League football. The Magpies come into this game in 3rd place but they have the same points as Manchester United but a win here and a slip up for Manchester City could mean that Eddie Howe’s side cut that deficit by only 3 points. Newcastle’s last game finished 0-0 against Crystal Palace and their last home game ended in another 0-0, this time to Leeds however generally at home Newcastle have been a tough team to beat and remain unbeaten from 10 games, winning 6 of them.

West Ham have been under intense pressure although their recent victory over Everton relieved that somewhat. They have climbed to 16th place but are far from out of the woods and are in fact just a point from being dumped into the bottom three, that is how tight and close it is down there. Form for the Hammers has been poor with just 4 points won from the last 15 on offer and away form remains a concern. On the road Moyes side would rank in 18th place having won just 5 points from a possible 30 and while they have conceded 13 goals which is better than Tottenham they have scored just six. The bottom line for the Hammers is that they have lost 70% of their games away from home.

Team News:

Newcastle: Bruno Guimaraes is suspended for this game, Alexander Isak has a head injury and is not expected to play until next week. Emil Krafth is ruled out until May with a knee injury. Javier Manquillo is out for at least another month with a knee injury, Matt Targett is still another two weeks away with his heel injury.

West Ham: Maxwell Cornet is a major doubt due to his calf. Latest signing Danny Ings is only 50/50 to make this one after his knee injury. Gianluca Scamacca is also out with a knee injury and surely won’t be rushed back and risked and Kurt Zouma is only 50/50 to return from a hip injury.

Newcastle vs West Ham Head to Head:

Last season West Ham won this fixture 4-2.

The last 3 meetings has witnessed both teams to score.

Newcastle have scored six goals past West Ham in the last three meetings.

Newcastle vs West Ham Prediction:

West Ham on paper have a good team but one can’t help but think that their latest victory over Everton was just papering over the cracks. This game remains an incredibly difficult one for the Londoners and Moyes has a poor record against top six teams, which Newcastle over just one season have become.

That’s not to say that the Magpies haven’t received a few blows themselves and any club missing the likes of Guimaraes and Isak are going to feel a hole. But at home we believe that Eddie Howe’s side are going to dish out a lesson to West Ham and let’s not forget that this could be the debut of former Everton player Anthony Gordon too. The atmosphere should be electric and the quality on the pitch should be too much for this West Ham team to take under the leadership of Moyes.
