Newcastle vs Burnley: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

Eddie Howe has quite a job on his hands as the new manager of Newcastle and despite him coming in very little has changed since Steve Bruce’s sacking but the club need to remain optimistic as they return back home.

On paper this is certainly a game that can be won as 20th take on 18th and if the Magpies fail to get victory here expect a lot of noise from the fans and a lot of criticism from the media.

In midweek Newcastle drew 1-1 at home to Norwich and even though Norwich have improved in recent weeks this was seen as a disappointing result. Norwich had 16 attempts on goal, which is staggering for a club that have not started the campaign in glowing fashion and were the away side. To compound matters even more the Magpies were playing with 10 men for the majority of the game after Ciaran Clark was shown a straight red card.

Currently Newcastle are six points from safety and overall form compared to earlier in the season has improved with 3 draws from their last four games but they are still searching for their first victory of the season.

Burnley’s recent form has been encouraging too as they have been able to avoid defeats and indeed come into this encounter with no losses in their last five games. Though 4 of those results have ended in draws. The clubs latest result was decent, a 0-0 draw against Wolves who have been strong lately and that was away from home.

On the road they go again up to Newcastle and Burnley have no wins with the majority of their results ending in draws. They are unbeaten in their last 3 away games but as a timely reminder they have the 2nd to worst away record in the Premier League.

Team News:

Newcastle: Elliot Anderson has an on going knock and hasn’t been ruled out but is a doubt. Ciaran Clarke is suspended because of his red card in midweek.

Burnley: Phillip Bardsley could be assessed but he is a major doubt with a muscle injury. Ashley Barnes is out with his thigh and Dale Stephens could be brought back into contention after being ill.

Newcastle vs Burnley Head to Head:

The teams last played each other here this season in the EFL Cup. The game finished 0-0 but Burnley advanced on penalties.

Last season Newcastle won 3-1.

From the last 8 meetings between the two Burnley has just two victories.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Newcastle vs Burnley Prediction:

We’ve been seeing a win coming at last for Newcastle for the past few games and one has to sense that this could be it finally. Newcastle really do not have any excuses. A new manager can come in and we can see wins flying around or we can see a little improvement and potential and that is certainly the latter in regards to Eddie Howe. But even if you are bottom if the team you are playing are struggling too and you are at home you have to nail the 3 points down.

Backing any winner in this game is a risk because the teams are evidently equal but that also means there is good value to be had as the market is open. We will back the home side.

As for goalscorers Callum Wilson almost won the game against Norwich and when he is on form he can be a handful for a lot of defences. Burnley are conceding almost 2 goals per game on the road and we believe that Wilson will have a few opportunities at home to help his team get what would be a huge win.
