Newcastle vs Arsenal: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Monday 16th May 2022
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

Newcastle are in 14th place and while the club have greatly improved since January there have been a few dropped points in the last six weeks and you get the feeling that their objectives at one point was about trying to finish in the top half of the league. That is in the balance right now and they are three points from that position but with teams in front of them.

However for Newcastle it is all about how they have been performing at home and they have lost just one game here since December and that was only a narrow 1-0 loss against Liverpool. The Magpies last game will want to be forgotten quickly as they lost 5-0 at Manchester City. City’s level is where Newcastle want to be in a few years time and with the money the club have it could well be a possibility, but it has to be baby steps first for Eddie Howe’s side.

The majority of Newcastle’s results at home have ended in wins with seven from 18 games played, it’s interesting to see that Chelsea only have 3 points more than Newcastle at home and it has been the clubs home form which has seen them move from the bottom three at the turn of the year to easy survival for this season, they are not a team to be taken lightly.

Arsenal look all in a panic after their Champions League qualification took a heavy blow in midweek with a 3-0 loss against their bitter rivals Tottenham. The Gunners imploded in the first half and so did Rob Holding who was sent off. Now Arsenal are only 50/50 to make it to Europe’s grandest of competitions but at the end of the day their fate is at least in their hands.

The Gunners know what they have to do as Tottenham won at the weekend and have gone two points clear but this is Arsenal’s game in hand, in short it’s huge. Arsenal have won 9 times away from home but have lost 8, and three from their last five games.

Team News:

Newcastle vs Arsenal Head to Head:

Last season Newcastle lost this game 2-0.

Arsenal have beaten Newcastle 8 times in a row and the Magpies last win over them was 4 years ago.

3 of the last 4 meetings has seen under 2.5 goals.

Newcastle vs Arsenal Prediction:

Arsenal have a very good record over Newcastle and while the Magpies are making that transition from an average side to a powerful one this could be the game where Newcastle give Arsenal a lot to think about. Had this been a home game for Mikel Arteta’s side we would be thinking a straight forward win but Newcastle will be dangerous and have the players to upset the Gunners.

However only one club is playing for something and Arsenal at their best have a very good pacey side and a team that are going to have plenty of opportunities, but will they be at their best? This is like a cup final for Arsenal and they have a very good record over Newcastle. There are two big concerns though,  did the manner in which they lost to Tottenham rock the players boat? And do Arsenal have enough to beat Newcastle at St James' where there only EPL loss this year has been a narrow 1-0 loss to Liverpool? Therefore we think backing Newcastle on a very generous handicap could be the way to go.
