Newcastle vs Arsenal: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 2nd May 2021
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

Newcastle have sprouted wings and are no longer relegation contenders after a great April saw the club go undefeated for 4 games. The Magpies have been able to pull out good form just at the right time and will feel confident coming into this game.

Last weekend Steve Bruce’s team earned an unlikely draw at Liverpool after being a goal down and they now have an 9 point advantage over 18th placed Fulham. It’s been six weeks since Newcastle tasted defeat and at home they are undefeated in their last five games earning 9 points in that time. Newcastle’s last home game ended in a 3-2 win over West Ham. If results around them fall in their favour and they do win this encounter over Arsenal, Newcastle could well move up 2-3 places and suddenly we might see a very strong finish from Bruce’s team.

Arsenal have had a miserable week where they lost against Everton at home for the first time in 25 years. That result effectively put an end to Arsenal’s chances of qualifying for Europe through the league. That game was followed up by a 2-1 loss to Villarreal in the Europa League semi-final 1st leg. Arsenal are still in the game because of the away goal but they put in a very average performance.

The Gunner’s 3-0 win over Sheffield United a few weeks back is their only win in the league over the past five outings and the club are clearly in poor form. If Leeds have failed to win on Saturday then Arsenal could go 9th with victory here.

Team News:

Newcastle: Karl Darlow is out with his knee injury and is set to miss 2-3 weeks. Matt Ritchie has a slight calf injury but is being tipped to be fine for the game. Fabian Schar could return but will be assessed for fitness. Jamaal Lascelles has a foot injury and there has been no updates on him and Isaac Hayden is ruled out for the season with a knee injury.

Arsenal: Alexandre Lacazette could return for this game after his hamstring injury. Kieran Tierney is being pencilled in to return for this game following his knee injury.

Newcastle vs Arsenal Prediction:

Clearly Newcastle have a poor record over Arsenal but we have to look into different matters for this game. Arsenal despite what anyone from the club says will be focused and thinking about the Villarreal game next week. It is that one match which will define their season as they try to reach the Europa League final.

Arsenal have had to travel to Spain and then fight hard in the game which became quite physical all the while Newcastle players could relax and watch that very game at home. This game is in Newcastle and that means Arsenal had to travel from Spain to London and then onto Newcastle, another 350 miles or so. One has to wonder if all this travelling coupled by the fact that this game means little to the club isn’t going to work in Newcastle’s favour?

We also have to wonder if Arteta is really going to start with his strongest team. Arsenal on their day are still a dangerous team to play, but the value may reside with Newcastle.
