Man Utd vs West Ham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 22nd January 2022
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

Ralf Rangnick has come under all sorts of pressure since he took on the role as Manchester United manager but in fact he has only lost 1 game with the club as they try to bid to finish in the top 4.

But problems persist because nobody can see a change in the teams attitude since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked at the end of last year, and a new manager usually means new tactics and a bold and different set up and that hasn’t been the case. Too many points have been dropped just look at the Aston Villa game recently where United were cruising and in a 2-0 lead but they lost two points when Villa came back. The team can fight though and that was evident when they had their backs to the wall against Brentford in their last game. Playing the Bees away is never easy and United looked there for the taking. But this team does boast quality and they were able to step up a few gears and won that game 3-1.

So as it stands United are in 7th place with 35 points and 2 points behind their objective of 4th and they have a game in hand to play. However Tottenham and Arsenal also stand in their way and finishing in 4th does not look hopeful for the Red Devils currently but they are certainly in the chase. At home the club have won 50% of their games but also lost four matches from 10. Their last home game ended in a 1-0 defeat against Wolves.

There are 3 teams chasing West Ham and they all have games in hand over the Londoners. Now there are plenty of games to play still but it would feel that if the Hammers did not win this tie they might be slipping out of top 4 contention. The club did well to knock Leeds out of the FA Cup last week but then in true Hammers style they lost to the same team at the same stadium when they met up in the league a few days later. It’s interesting how a win and a loss can greatly impact your season because victory here would mean that David Moyes side would remain in 4th place and only be four points behind 3rd place Chelsea.

Team News:

Manchester United: Cristiano Ronaldo has a neck injury and will need to be assessed. Edinson Cavani has a muscle injury but could return for this game. Victor Lindelof will miss this game because of personal reasons. Scott McTominay is being backed to be fine for this game after a slight back injury. An update on Paul Pogba’s long term thigh injury suggests that the French international will return in two weeks time. Jadon Sancho is a doubt because of personal reasons. Luke Shaw has been ruled out because of his hamstring. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is out with illness and Eric Bailly is on international duty.

West Ham: Mark Noble is rated as 50/50 to return from a knock. Tomas Soucek and Kurt Zouma are back on the training pitch but both will be assessed due to fitness issues.

Man Utd vs West Ham Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 1-0 to Manchester United.

The clubs last met at Old Trafford back in September in the EFL Cup and West Ham won 1-0.

West Ham have not won away to Manchester United in the league for almost 15 years.

3 of the last four meetings has finished with the correct score of 1-0.

Man Utd vs West Ham Prediction:

Since David Moyes has taken over at West Ham we know they are a club not to be taken lightly and they will absolutely have their moments in this game. The Hammers will have their own pressures because lose here and they are relinquishing 4th place and the worry will be that they could slide down as 3 teams come in for the kill. But the last time they were in Manchester to face City the club gave a good account of themselves and only narrowly lost that game 2-1.

Manchester United will be hoping that Cristiano Ronaldo can play in this game. The Portuguese legend was substituted against Brentford and wasn’t happy and an unhappy Ronaldo may do wonders on the pitch for this game, we will have to wait and see if he can make it. What United need is a 2nd half Brentford performance and an assured 1st half display. We have been waiting for a few months now and by and large this team feel disjointed. But United have a really good record over the Hammers and will take heart from their latest league win. There is pressure and this is the final home game for the club for a few weeks as the break takes hold, we will back them for the win at the weekend.
