Man Utd vs Liverpool: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 24th October 2021
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

The two most successful teams in British football will go head to head on Sunday, and most of the football world will be watching.

Manchester United have been playing well, at times, and getting lucky, at times, but haven’t really exploded onto the scene as such not with the forward line they have. United have been thrilling in some of their games and having Cristiano Ronaldo has obviously helped but there is no getting away that United seem a little disjointed.

In the Champions League in midweek it was classic United though. Poor in the first half as they were 2-0 down to Italians Atalanta. But United came roaring back to win the game 3-2 and the script couldn’t have been written better for Ronaldo to score the winner, it was unbelievable scenes at Old Trafford just like it was against Newcastle and the same for Villarreal. Ronaldo brings the entertainment even at 36, but is he keeping Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a job?

In the league United have dropped to 8th place and there has been disappointment as they have gone their last 3 games without a win. Last weekend they could score goals but were ultimately exposed by a good attacking side in Leicester and lost the game 4-2. At home it’s two games without a win with a defeat against Aston Villa and a draw against Everton and in both cases United were lethargic.

Liverpool came into this weekend in 2nd place and they can’t go top of the league even with a win but they would put the pressure back on Chelsea. The Reds are the only club in the league undefeated with 5 wins and 3 draws from their 8 games played. Mohamed Salah has been superb this season and is their real danger man, and worryingly for opponents he seems to be getting better and better.

Liverpool’s last game was an easy 5-0 win over Watford where Salah showed his class once more but there are goals all over this side. It’s been a pretty perfect start for Liverpool and they have scored 22 goals so far the most of any side in the league and conceded just 6 times. On the road Liverpool has the best record with 10 points from a possible 12 and have scored 8 goals in their last two travels.

Team News:

Manchester United: Bruno Fernandes is a doubt with a knock and he will be assessed. Fred is only 50/50 to be involved due to his hamstring. Anthony Martial is being tipped to be fine for this game after his recent knock. Marcus Rashford has a dead leg but is also being tipped to recover in time. Raphael Varane is out with a thigh injury.

Liverpool: Curtis Jones should be fine to be included in the squad after his groin injury. Thiago Alcantara is not back for 4 weeks due to a calf injury.

Man Utd vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 4-2 to Liverpool.

These teams have scored 11 goals between them in the last two meetings.

In the last 7 meetings Manchester United has just 1 victory.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Man Utd vs Liverpool Prediction:

Manchester United have to be motivated for this game that is Solskjaer’s job and they are sure to be. Ronaldo will be relishing this huge game also, they will play the ball and have many attacking moments. There will be fuel within the team to do their best against such a rival. However passion runs only so far and whilst we shouldn’t discount United entirely they have really struggled against a Jurgen Klopp led Liverpool team.

Liverpool are the classier outfit and they will make life very difficult for United. It has got to the stage now that one has to wonder if only a non performance from Liverpool will mean they lose this game. How can one fathom Liverpool not being able to score against this United defence who look disjointed and seem to have a lack of understanding? At best United come away with a draw and a spectacular performance from Ronaldo. But we have to go for form here and the better, stronger and more inventive team are Liverpool.
