Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

The two most successful sides in England will go head to head on Sunday but times have changed and Manchester United are not the force they once were. However Erik ten Hag’s side can still pull out performances and being at home and playing their old rival one would suspect that United will be in good shape. Of course they could upend the title by winning this game and help out their even more bitter rivals in Manchester City, so let’s see how this one unfolds.

In midweek United lost a dramatic game away to Chelsea 4-3, in the 99th minute they were winning 3-2 and that stunning loss probably has confirmed that they won’t be playing Champions League football next season. United come into this weekend 9 points behind 5th placed Tottenham and 11 behind fourth placed Aston Villa, it seems too much of a stretch now to think that they will be able to make that gap up with 8 games left to play. Form has not been good with 4 points won from their last 15. While they have had some tough games we are going to remember how they lost at home to Fulham recently and could only draw at Brentford. At home overall form has seen 8 wins from 14 and just one defeat from their last five. United’s last home game ended in a 2-0 victory over Everton.

Liverpool won their 21st game of the season as they beat Sheffield United 3-1 but with twenty minutes to go of that game it was 1-1 and it just shows how competitive the league is when the bottom side can hold the league leaders and give them something to think about- in the end Liverpool got through and their quality told. The Reds have won 25 points from their last 10 games and are in the form of champions, can they hold out though? Arsenal could be top by the time this game is played but the Reds would go 2 points clear again with victory. Liverpool have won 4 of their last five games with just the 1-1 draw against Manchester City blemishing that record. Liverpool have been consistent and it is incredible to think that in the last 20 games Jurgen Klopp’s side have lost just once, that was against 2nd placed Arsenal.

Team News:

Manchester United: Casemiro and Jonny Evans will be assessed for respective knock and muscle injuries. Raphael Varane is a doubt after coming back from injury only to hurt his foot against Chelsea. There are long term injuries for Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Anthony Martial.

Liverpool: Wataru Endo will be assessed for a knock but is being tipped to be fine. Alisson and Diogo Jota miss out and are not expected back for another 10 days at least. Trent Alexander-Arnold is sidelined with a knee injury and not due back for two weeks. Stefan Bajcetic is nearing a return from a lengthy spell out with a calf injury but this game will come too soon for him. Ben Doak, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara are all out long term.

Man Utd vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season Manchester United won this fixture 2-1.

There is a 50% chance to see over 4.5 goals.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the teams drew 0-0.

Man Utd vs Liverpool Prediction:

Of course we shouldn’t forget that these two met here only three weeks ago in what would end up being an epic FA Cup game in which Manchester United rose to the occasion and won 4-3. Will that performance and result have any bearing on this game? Liverpool will have to be focused as we know how this United side can play like a top four one when they are motivated. How down will they be feeling about the Chelsea defeat? Nine times out of ten surely Liverpool would have won that game. Keep an eye on how Tottenham and Aston Villa do this weekend any slip ups from them and United will believe again that a top 5 spot is on, and we could see a different mindset from them, but getting past Liverpool for a second time in a few weeks is a big big ask.
