Man Utd vs Liverpool: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 2nd May 2021
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

It would be highly probable even two months into the Premier League season to have expected these two clubs to have their positions reversed coming into this game the following May. But it is the champions, Liverpool who come into this always fiery duel in 6th place.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has made it clear that his team need to win their remaining games if they are to have any chance of qualifying for next seasons Champions League. The reality is that Liverpool have only a slim hope of doing so and are 4 points behind that objective coming into this weekend. The other problem that the Reds have is that 4th place is also being challenged by Chelsea, West Ham and Everton.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last five games but the problems that have dogged the side from Christmas are still there. Look at their last two games for evidence where against Newcastle and Leeds respectively Liverpool blew their lead twice and in the closing stages to end up with draws and 4 points dropped.

Have Manchester United been this upbeat since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became manager? Everyone at the club is smiling and yes United look destined to finish the season as runners-up but the smiles are being more reserved for their fantastic run in the Europa League. The Red Devils smashed Roma in midweek winning their 1st leg semi-final 6-2. It was a stunning result given that they went in at half time 2-1 down. United will be favourites to win the competition now and that would be quite an achievement for the Norwegian and for the side.

Leicester dropped two points on Friday as they could only draw 1-1 at Southampton and it means that a win for United here would see them go 7 points clear of the Foxes and that would more or less secure 2nd place for them. United also have an extra incentive not to lose to the old enemy and that is if Manchester City have won on Saturday and Liverpool win this game then City would be crowned champions on Sunday.

Solskjaer’s side did draw their last game a 0-0 against Leeds but have been in brilliant form and won their previous 4 games. This is a game despite the Europa League 2nd leg looming in Italy that United will take seriously and be focused on, they can afford that with a 4 goal lead. At home the club have won their last four with their last home game in the league ending in a 3-1 win over Burnley.

Team News:

Manchester United: There are no new injuries for the club but Anthony Martial and Phil Jones both knee injuries are out long term.

Liverpool: Nathaniel Phillips is struggling with a hamstring injury and remains a doubt to return. Divock Origi is out with a muscle injury. Jordan Henderson, Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk are long term injuries.

Man Utd vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Liverpool have not recorded a win at Old Trafford in the league since 2014.

Last season this fixture ended 1-1.

The last time the teams played was in the FA Cup in January and Manchester United knocked Liverpool out by beating them 3-2.

There is an 80% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Man Utd vs Liverpool Prediction:

This will be a very difficult game for Liverpool because out of the two sides they are the ones who have to come forward and take the risks. This will leave gaps and United will relish that. We have a United side who are very confident and will fancy their chances here against an out of sorts Liverpool side who have too much riding on this game. This is a match that could settle who wins the league and a match that could kill off Liverpool’s Champions League hopes.

History says this is a low scoring game but we're not sure that will be the case this weekend as Liverpool will need to push for the win, which will leave opportunities for goals. We will opt to see a home win but cover the draw on the refund, it could be narrow and our judgement is based on the fact that United haven’t looked this good or indeed happy for several years, they are enjoying their football, the same can’t be said of Liverpool who just want this season to end.
