Match Preview:

The advantage that Manchester City will have coming into this game is that they will know Liverpool’s result from Saturday. If Liverpool have dropped points that will be a huge moment and City could come into this one with one hand on the title- that’s what it takes between these two teams, no slips up can be allowed.

Of course the bottom line for City is that they must win their games no matter what has happened with Liverpool the day before and being at home Pep Guardiola’s side will be expected to have few problems. However of course the team come into this game feeling deflated as they were dramatically dumped out of the Champions League in the semi-finals by Real Madrid. You can lose games but it is the way it happens that can feel worse than it is. With City they were a minute away from reaching the final and then Real Madrid scored 2 goals in that time to force extra time where they eventually won 6-5 on aggregate.

Even for this great City side that has to have consequences and we will see just how great a man manager Guardiola is on Sunday as City need to react. At the moment they lead the Premier League by one point but there is an increasing chance that the club could end up with no trophies this season. City’s form in the league is good with 3 wins in a row and they won their last game 4-0 at Leeds, but then again they have had no stern tests in that time. At home they have dropped four points from their last five games which at their standard and this moment in the league title simply isn’t good enough, though they have won their last two games here. City have also scored 50 goals at home, easily the most in the league.

Newcastle are in 10th place and their highest finish this season will probably be 9th, but that would be an incredible recovery for a side that were in the bottom three at the turn of the year. The Magpies had won four games in a row before last weekend’s defeat at home to Liverpool- their first loss at home in almost five months. Even that match only ended 1-0 to the Reds and while Newcastle will be the underdogs here they come into this match much more calm and relaxed than their opponents.

Away form has remained problematic for Eddie Howe and the club did win their last away game but have still lost 3 from their last four, and their last away victory was only against the bottom side Norwich. It’s just four wins on the road for the club so far.

Team News:

Manchester City: John Stones remains a doubt with a muscle injury, Kyle Walker could be in contention for a return after a knock in midweek.

Newcastle: Callum Wilson who has been missing for the past four months has recovered from injury and could make his return in this game though he has some fitness issues and will have to be assessed. Fabian Schar is only 50/50 after a recent knock and will be assessed. Kieran Trippier could be back too but also has some fitness issues. Ryan Fraser is out with his hamstring for at least two weeks.

Man City vs Newcastle Head to Head:

If Newcastle win this game they would draw level with Manchester City on 73 wins each in their history of games.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Manchester City won 4-0.

Manchester City have scored 8 goals in their last two meetings with Newcastle.

Newcastle have not won away in a league game against Manchester City since 2000.

Man City vs Newcastle Prediction:

We expect to see a very open game and it is not worth backing City for the win at their odds on prices. However look at it this way Newcastle have nothing to lose, they could come here and get beaten badly and it doesn’t really matter, and the reason for that is that manager Howe will want to see his team give City a game, and maybe even go toe to toe with them. Newcastle will smell blood after City’s disappointments and they have the quality to come forward and ask questions of City’s defence.

However we expect a good reaction from City- the league title is all they have now from the season that promised much more. But a league title of course is still a fantastic achievement, they still have the chance to deny Liverpool of a quadruple and they still have a chance to win back to back titles and that spirit and endeavour will mean so much to Guardiola, he just needs to hope his players at least for this weekend are on the same page. We do expect to see an open game and with that goals for both teams, so this looks like being the better market to concentrate on.
