Man City vs Chelsea: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 15th January 2022
Kick off at 12:30pm GMT
Venue: Etihad Stadium

Match Preview:

Even though Chelsea would have 16 more games to play they will be the first to understand that if they lose here or even draw that their league title chances will be almost at zero.

This game is of course a repeat of last seasons Champions League final where Chelsea beat City 1-0. The two clubs have become great rivals over the past decade and are the two most recent teams to be injected with a seemingly bottomless pit of money. It’s safe to say that over the past 15 years both clubs histories have been completely changed.

Manchester City already have a 10 point lead over Chelsea with the same games played and have won their last 11 games. The clubs last defeat was a surprise one at home to Crystal Palace almost three months ago and since then that loss has woken them up as they march towards the league title yet again. Can they be stopped? There are slim chances for both Chelsea and Liverpool to make a case and this weekend will certainly tell us more where the 2021/22 title is heading.

The loss to Crystal Palace is City’s only defeat at home this season and they have won 8 games from 10 and drawn one. Pep Guardiola’s side are scoring on average 3 goals per game at home including 13 goals in their last two home matches and have conceded just six times.

Chelsea will be in great spirits as they reached the EFL Cup final after beating Tottenham 1-0 in the 2nd leg of their semi-final clash. The Blues have gone through 3-0 on aggregate and will face either Liverpool or Arsenal. It’s been a welcome relief for the club who were in the headlines for all the wrong reasons a week ago because of the Romelu Lukaku fall out. That episode is over now and the club will be looking to finish strongly in the league.

Liverpool will be at home to Brentford this weekend and will be expected to win that game so if Chelsea do not beat City they would slip to 3rd place and have also played a game extra than the Reds so there is pressure to win here. And what pressure it will be, effectively this will feel like a cup final given the consequences for the club if they are unable to win here.

Chelsea’s form has not been good with just 1 win in their past five games, the other matches all ended in draws. The Blues have had some hard fixtures and their last one finished in a 2-2 draw at home to Liverpool. It would have felt like a small victory though given that they were trailing that game 2-0.

Team News:

Manchester City: Phil Foden missed the last game because of a lack of match fitness and will be assessed for this one, if picked he may not start. Riyad Mahrez is on international duty, John Stones will be assessed because of a recent knock.

Chelsea: Trevoh Chalobah will be assessed following his hamstring injury but has a chance to play. Another hamstring injury is more worrying though for Reece James who looks set to miss another game. Edouard Mendy is on international duty.

Man City vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Last season Chelsea won this game 2-1.

From the last 4 meetings Chelsea have won three of them although Manchester City did win the earlier season game in London winning 1-0.

3 of the last four meetings has ended with the same score line of 1-0.

Man City vs Chelsea Prediction:

This is a huge game for both sides; a Manchester City win would see daylight and Chelsea would be out of the title race in January! Both clubs of course will give their all for the 3 points and we should expect to see a much improved display from Chelsea compared to the last month, but there is more pressure on Chelsea to win. If City lose this game they will still have an healthy advantage at the top, and we think City will be professional of course but can also take some risks.

Edouard Mendy is a big loss in goal for the Blues so it will be interesting to see how they cope without their great goalkeeper. The value seems to be with Chelsea on the handicap, so our bet will require Man City to win by 2 goals for the bet to lose.

Recently goals have dried up in this fixture but with the way City have been scoring them we expect to see at least 3 goals in this game, again this comes down to the fact that this isn’t a must win game for the home side and they will be far the more relaxed team. For Chelsea it really is win or bust at the weekend.
