Man City vs Aston Villa: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Kick off at 4pm BST
Venue: Etihad Stadium

Match Preview:

Manchester City are very close to becoming back to back champions, all they have to do is win one more game and it's at the Etihad, what could go wrong? Well football being football everything- there is a reason that people sometimes refer to the footballing Gods. All being well City should win and win well, but let’s see if there will be a final sting in the tail.

City are 1 point to the good of 2nd placed Liverpool, win this game and there is nothing that the Reds can do. Draw here and if Liverpool win, City will have lost the title on what would be a dramatic day for football. We’ve seen plenty of dramatic days and one of those was 10 years ago when City won their first Premier League title in incredible fashion when a late Sergio Aguero goal was enough to clinch the title with seconds left to play. City would be happy just to see a standard win and for this game to be wrapped up super quick.

Let’s be honest it hasn’t been a great season for City up until now. Yes they have been quite superb in the league and have scored goals, produced wonderful ones at that and been brilliant. But if they don’t win this game they will finish the season empty handed, that would be a disaster for the club. Champions League pain has continued for them this year also so the league has to be a must. In City’s last game they dropped rare points by drawing 2-2 at West Ham, they were losing that game 2-0 and showed great character to come back. However that draw means that the league title is not over could it come back to haunt them?

City have lost just two games so far at home and just one this year which came against Tottenham. They have 14 wins from 18 games played and have scored the most at home with 55 so far, averaging an incredible 3 goals per game.

Aston Villa are in 14th and they can’t finish any lower. There has been some encouraging times for the club this season but also poor form at times so for next season there will be much work to be done. This is a game though which will focus on Villa manager Steven Gerrard, he is of course a Liverpool legend and would love nothing more than his side to beat City and give Liverpool the title. Villa have shown some good form coming into this game with just one defeat which was against Liverpool in their last five games. It is two draws in a spin though with Villa’s last game ending 1-1 against Burnley.

Team News:

Manchester City: John Stones and Kyle Walker are being tipped to return after fitness issues but will have to be assessed. Ruben Dias is out for the season with his hamstring.

Aston Villa: There are no new injuries for the club ahead of this game but Leon Bailey is struggling to come back before the end of the season with his ankle.

Man City vs Aston Villa Head to Head:

Last season Manchester City won this fixture 2-0.

Manchester City have won the last 8 meetings in a row.

There is an 80% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Man City vs Aston Villa Prediction:

There is another story running in this game and that is could Gerrard’s team spring a surprise and help give his former team an incredible title, he wasn’t able to do it as a player after all. Villa will set up and try to frustrate their opponents and try to catch them on the break. But today should be all about City and their pressing and possession and we expect them to get the win that they need. So do of course are the bookmakers and there is no value for them. City tend to get a big win over Villa but for the majority of the time the scores can be close.

This game has to be vintage, epic City with no excuses and it would be a real surprise if the club imploded here, it’s difficult to see and we see only one winner, the 2022 champions by a whisker should be Pep Guardiola’s side.
