England Premier League
Sunday 3rd October 2021
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
The Premier League weekend is rounded off by the biggest match the competition can provide at the present time. It is the current champions against the 2020 champions, it can only be Liverpool and Manchester City.
The atmosphere will be incredible at Anfield more so because Liverpool will be facing perhaps their nearest challengers to the title this season, and Manchester City have become the real rival to Liverpool as we have witnessed these two teams slug it out at the top for 3 years in a row.
As for Liverpool they have started strong and are in 2nd place with no defeats and would go 1st with victory here. The Reds did drop 2 points away to Brentford though as that enthralling end to end game finished 3-3. Is that a reminder that this Liverpool side are not as strong as the 2020 team? In the Champions League though in midweek the Reds turned on the style as they crushed Porto 5-1 and that is a reminder to everyone how strong Liverpool still are. At home in the Premier League the club have beaten Burnley and Crystal Palace and drew 1-1 with Chelsea.
Manchester City seemed to lay down their marker to give Chelsea a rare defeat last weekend as they went to Stamford Bridge and won 1-0. City have won 4 of their last 5 games but have only scored 2 goals in their past 3 games which isn’t like them. However in defence just 1 goal has been conceded so far.
City didn’t come off to well in their Champions League game away to PSG though which saw them lose 2-0 and one of those goals was Lionel Messi’s first for the French giants. This result will not have harmed City, but maybe one can feel for them right now as the fixture Gods have hardly been on their side. What a triple header that is having to face Chelsea, PSG and then Liverpool.
Pep Guardiola’s side are in 6th place coming into this game but could go in 1st place if they win and win well. Away form has been impressive even if it does include a loss to Tottenham because they have been able to beat and not concede a goal to Leicester and Chelsea.
Liverpool: Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss out due to a groin injury and isn’t expected back for another two weeks at least.
Manchester City: Ilkay Gundogan has been ruled out for at least two weeks due to a knock. Oleksandr Zinchenko has the same problem and is also out.
Liverpool vs Man City Head to Head:
Last season this fixture ended in disaster for Liverpool as they were beaten 4-1.
Liverpool have won just 1 game from the past 7 meetings against Manchester City.
Manchester City won at Anfield last season but apart from that we would have to go back to 2003 for their last win in the league here.
5 of the last 6 meetings has witnessed both teams to score.
Liverpool vs Man City Prediction:
Manchester City’s victory at Liverpool last season was fantastic but maybe we shouldn’t read too much into it, as Liverpool collapsed at one point. The truth is that Manchester City’s record at Anfield this century is very poor. This is an interesting fact because the club have of course been super rich and been able to bring in fantastic players and managers for the best part of 13 years. But by and large it hasn’t affected their performances in a positive way at Anfield. At the same time City are beating quality away from home.
We will back Liverpool to get at least a point from this encounter and we must remember that the Reds are the only side left in the Premier League who haven’t lost yet. It has been a farly tough period for Guardiola’s side who have had to face quality teams and all of these games have been away from home, that can take it it’s toll. There was 5 goals here last season we may only see 1 and expect this to be a very closely contested match.
