Liverpool vs Aston Villa: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 10th April 2021
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

Despite their recent poor form Liverpool are in a great position to claim a top four place. This is partly due by the fact that their away form has hardly been affected and last weekend they underlined how dangerous they can still be by beating Arsenal 3-0 away from home.

Liverpool come into this game a cool 25 points behind league leaders Manchester City but only 3 points from 4th which is their objective now. The Reds have won 9 points from their last 15 and on form they would be in 4th place. Has Liverpool’s implosion been greatly exaggerated? In winning the league, no, but in still being a dangerous team perhaps it has.

Still Liverpool’s good away form did nothing for them in midweek as they lost 3-1 against Real Madrid in the 1st leg of their quarter final match in the Champions League. Liverpool aren’t quite out but do face an uphill struggle- oh how they would love Anfield to be packed out for the return leg, but of course it isn’t going to happen.

Aston Villa are in 9th place and 5 points behind their hosts. Villa have blown their chances for a surprise top 4 finish with a series of disappointing results over the past couple of months but they could still finish in a Europa League position and do have a game in hand over some of their rivals. It was a welcome win last weekend too as Villa beat Fulham 3-1.

Away from home Dean Smith’s side have won seven games from 15 and have lost just once in their last five outings. Of course what will be on everyone’s minds will be the game with Liverpool earlier in the season when Villa scored 7 goals past them to win 7-2 and record one of the stunning results in the top flight, it also seemed to signal Liverpool’s decline this season.

Team News:

Liverpool: Divock Origi is still sidelined with a muscle injury, Jordan Henderson and Virgil van Dijk are long term absentees, Joel Matip has been ruled out for the season.

Aston Villa: Jack Grealish has a shin injury, there is hope he could play at the weekend but will need to be assessed. Wesley will be assessed but has some fitness issues.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa Head to Head:

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Aston Villa stunned Liverpool by beating them 7-2!

Last season Liverpool beat Aston Villa 2-0.

Liverpool have scored 12 goals past Aston Villa in the last 4 league meetings.

The last time the teams played was in January in the FA Cup where Liverpool won 4-1.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa Prediction:

Liverpool have a huge game with Real Madrid coming up but manager Jurgen Klopp does not have the luxury to chop and change his players and rest any of them. They need to finish in a top four place for next season and need this win. He will be demanding that his team put in strong performances from now on and they come into this home fixture having lost their last six in a row, a record for the club.

There will also be the thoughts of avenging that earlier 7-2 score line and Liverpool have managed to get some good results and always seem to score a few against Villa. We do expect a home win and we also expect goals. They need to start quick and try and get this game done and dusted. No one at the club will admit it but most will be thinking of the Champions League game coming up next week.
