Crystal Palace vs Newcastle: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 23rd October 2021
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Selhurst Park

Match Preview:

Normally a 2-2 draw away to Arsenal would have been something to celebrate for Crystal Palace but the Eagles would have felt gutted after leading the game 2-1 deep into injury time. Now it is up to manager Patrick Vieira to motivate his team for this very interesting game at home to Newcastle.

Palace are in 14th place although they have drawn their last 3 games in a row and have looked like a team that are working hard on the training pitch and listening to their manager’s ideas. However with 5 draws already they are being anchored and with just one victory so far one would expect an extra push from the club by now. The good news for the Eagles is that they are unbeaten at home and their last home match finished 2-2 against Leicester. They will have to use their strengths at home that must be the project to become a very difficult side to beat, at least in front of their home fans.

Newcastle have been dominating the news in England as they were finally taken over and already they are being tipped to be the next big club in the Premier League. Well they have wasted no time as Steve Bruce has been sacked after just 1 game in charge since the new owners took over. In fairness Bruce was having a poor season and it seems clear that he had lost the dressing room, take over or no take over and the Magpies who are in 19th place are still waiting for their first victory of the campaign. Despite the many millions now at the club they have no replacement for Bruce and instead his assistant Graeme Jones has been named interim manager.

Bruce oversaw his last game in charge in an entertaining fixture that finished 3-2 to Tottenham, it was also Bruce’s 1,000th game as a manager. As for where the club are now it will be fascinating to see if the players can respond to Bruce’s sacking, the big question will be will there be another improvement? This is questionable given that Bruce hasn’t been properly replaced and the Magpies cannot open up their cheque books for another three months.

Away from home Newcastle have earned just 1 point from a possible 12 which came against another club who have recently sacked their manager in Watford.

Team News:

Crystal Palace: Wilfried Zaha is expected to recover from illness although he will face a late assessment first. Nathan Ferguson is not expected back for another month with his Achilles injury.

Newcastle: Jonjo Shelvey is suspended for this game after his red card last weekend. Paul Dummett is out long term with his calf injury but the Magpies have no new injuries ahead of this encounter.

Crystal Palace vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Last season Newcastle won this fixture 2-0.

There is an 80% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

In the history of this fixture Crystal Palace have won just 24% of the games.

Crystal Palace vs Newcastle Prediction:

Patrick Vieira will have to motivate his players to be ready for this game and forget what happened at Arsenal and of course the good news is that they didn’t lose the game. Palace have become a solid outfit and based on form and how the two teams have started the season they must be considered as favourites.

Newcastle have just been taken over and the future looks bright so why does it seem rather messy for the club in the present day? Are the happiest people in Newcastle Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley, one would have to presume they are. Ashley has been able to sell up for a reported £300m and Bruce’s severance pay is around the £7m mark, not bad going at all. As for the players if a big name manager was stepping in this would motivate them, but as it stands it seems very likely that Newcastle’s fortunes won’t be changing anytime soon.
