Crystal Palace vs Newcastle: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 21st January 2023
Kick off at 5:30pm GMT
Venue: Selhurst Park

Match Preview:

The early evening game will see Crystal Palace take on Newcastle and both clubs will have different objectives here. For Palace it’s about climbing into the top half of the table, though that won’t be possible even if they win here but they will be making strides forward. Progress needs to be seen under manager Patrick Vieira who is replicating for now just what Roy Hodgson was able to do and he will want to move on from that. Palace played in midweek and it would have felt like a win as they scored in the last minute to draw 1-1 with Manchester United at home. They stay at home which is a good advantage for them and that draw did end two games without any points. The Eagles could fly past Aston Villa with victory here if Unai Emery’s side has dropped points in the earlier game.

Newcastle are having a superb season and no one really would have expected them to be in the top four. Not only is Eddie Howe’s side 4th but they are five points clear of fifth placed Tottenham and have a game in hand. The Magpies have earned 11 points from their last 15 and still have only lost 1 game so far which was away to Liverpool.

Newcastle would go past Manchester United with victory at least for 24 hours and in their last game they won their 10th game of the season as they beat Fulham 1-0. On he road 16 of their 38 points have been won with 3 wins from their last four and their last away game ended in a 0-0 draw with league leaders Arsenal, they have also only conceded six goals.

Team News:

Crystal Palace: There are no new injuries for the club but long term absentees include James McArthur and Joachim Andersen. Nathan Ferguson remains a hope but is doubtful with fitness issues.

Newcastle: Bruno Guimarares could be assessed with his recent ankle injury but it is unsure if he will be rushed back for this game and he could just miss out. Jonjo Shelvey is out for another 3 weeks at least with his calf and Matt Targett is sidelined with a heel injury.

Crystal Palace vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 1-1.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the game ended 0-0.

It’s been 5 games since Crystal Palace beat Newcastle.

The last four meetings have all finished in under 1.5 goals.

Crystal Palace vs Newcastle Prediction:

Of course we know how strong Newcastle have been this season, they have actually been immense and if it wasn’t for the spate of draws at the beginning of the season they would absolutely be in the title chase. It is incredible to think that they have only lost once but they will be facing a difficult opponent and one that they struggled to beat in their last few games.

Palace will feel upbeat being at home and even though they played in midweek it is really important they have remained here and will be focused. Newcastle will be the favourites to win this game but the value is with Palace, which is why we can back them on a good handicap, because can Newcastle really keep up this type of form? For how long? And if they do start dropping points we expect it to be away from home.
