Crystal Palace vs Liverpool: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 23rd January 2022
Kick off at 2pm GMT
Venue: Selhurst Park

Match Preview:

Crystal Palace come into this game on Sunday in 11th place and they will be safe this season barring a huge implosion in form. Patrick Vieira has done a very good job in his first season so far but the Eagles would love to make an impact and will try to finish in the top 10 at least.

Perhaps the best way to judge Vieira’s impact at least statistically is looking at last season under Roy Hodgson who managed to get Palace to 44 points. If Palace keep up their form they may miss out on that and end up with about 40 points, however this being Vieira’s first season that shouldn’t be judged in a negative light. The problem with the club has not been so much in the amount of games they have lost but on their draws and they have 9 so far only one other team in Brighton can top that and those teams met last time out and of course that game ended in a draw.

At home the Eagles have the 6th best record which may come as a surprise to some and have won 17 points from a possible 33. Their last home game did end in defeat though against West Ham but it was only their 2nd home loss of the season.

Liverpool’s league title chances could effectively end this weekend and that is not to draw any sensation into the story. If Manchester City have won on Saturday and if Liverpool lose this game they would be 14 points behind and even with a game in hand that seems like a weak case to be winning the league. All Liverpool can do at this time is win each game presented to them but on the surface this looks like a tricky encounter.

As for form the Reds have been poor by their standards with just 1 win in their last four games and that was a home victory over Brentford. Jurgen Klopp’s side have not won on the road for 3 games and that goes back to when they beat Wolves at the beginning of December and since then they have drawn against Tottenham and Chelsea and lost to Leicester. A loss or even a draw could also let Chelsea into 2nd place by the closure of the weekend.

Team News:

Crystal Palace: Chiekhou Kouyate and Wilfried Zaha are on international duty. James Tomkins has a knock and James McArthur won’t return for another two weeks.

Liverpool: Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita are on international duty. Harvey Elliott has recovered from injury but has a lack of match fitness and isn’t likely to return for another two months. Joel Matip has a slight muscle injury but will be assessed. Thiago Alcantara and Divock Origi remain sidelined.

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season won’t be forgotten in a hurry as Liverpool crushed Crystal Palace 7-0.

Earlier this season in the reverse fixture Liverpool won 3-0.

Liverpool have won the last 10 meetings in a row and Palace have not beaten the Reds when at home since 2014.

In the last 4 meetings Liverpool have scored 16 goals past Palace and they have scored 0.

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool Prediction:

Liverpool need to shrug off their average form and get the win here. The omens do seem to be with them and they have a fantastic record over Crystal Palace. The club will be spirited of course as they reached the EFL Cup final after knocking Arsenal out at the semi-final stage with an inspired 2-0 victory at the Emirates.

Liverpool are missing Salah and Mane up front but still have plenty of quality and one danger man is obviously Diogo Jota who is loving his exposure right now in the absence of the usual two up front. We will back him to score in this game but make no mistake Klopp’s side will have to dig deep for the win here, Palace have been solid at home and will make life difficult. Usually there are goals in this game but we think this could be tight and it may be better to back under 3 goals at a reasonable price, with the refund on 3 goals exactly, meaning only 4 or more goals would lose the bet.

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool Betting Tips:

Liverpool to beat Crystal Palace at 1.55

Anytime goalscorer: Diogo Jota at 2.10

Goal line (Under 3) at 1.675
