Croatia vs Spain: Preview and Prediction

European Championships 2020
Monday 28th June 2021
Kick off at 5pm BST
Venue: Parken Stadium

Match Preview:

Croatia showed glimpses of the team that reached the World Cup Final in 2018 in the group stages but one would feel they will have to find another level if they are to advance to the last eight.

In the group stages England were able to avenge their World Cup semi-final defeat by beating them 1-0. Croatia found themselves a goal down against the Czech Republic before drawing that game. We finally witnessed the best of them though when a Luka Modric inspired performance saw them easily beat Scotland winning 3-1 in the end. That was an impressive result given that Scotland had to win and the match was at Hampden Park.

Spain have been much the same, we know how technically good their team is, but they started the competition slow with two draws against Sweden and then Poland and the pressure was certainly building on coach Luis Enrique. That changed as in their last game the confidence and commitment came back and Spain romped to a 5-0 win over Slovakia. The score line felt like a timely reminder to their rivals that they are still in this competition and believe that they can win their 3rd European Championship out of the last four.

Team News:

Croatia: There are no injury worries for Croatia coming into this game, and their line up should replicate what we have already seen in the group stages.

Spain: The only worry that Spain have ahead of this game is a slight calf strain fo Cesar Azpilicueta and he will be assessed.

Croatia vs Spain Head to Head:

The last time the nations played was in 2018 in the UEFA Nations League where Croatia won 3-2.

Croatia beat Spain in Euro 2016 in the group stage winning that game 2-1.

There is a 70% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Croatia vs Spain Prediction:

Both teams have had the same form in this competition where we expected to see a bit more and when they were pushed they both delivered. Croatia have had some encouraging results against Spain lately, although in one UEFA Nations League game Spain beat them 6-0, although this game took place in Spain.

Spain looked brilliant against Slovakia but at the same time this team does feel like a shadow of the brilliant one that won 2 European Championships in 2008 and 2012. Alvaro Morata and Gerard Moreno will be called on to make the difference up front, in a game that could be very close.

Croatia are an impressive side in midfield, but perhaps they are missing a more natural striker. Still if they are able to control the pace of the game and win the midfield battle then they have a great chance to win this game, and we think having Modric in the side could be a key factor in beating the Spanish. Croatia look like a team growing in confidence as the competition moves on, and they should prove to be a difficult opposition for Spain.
