Chelsea vs Watford: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 22nd May 2022
Kick off at 4pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

Chelsea will finish in 3rd place now no matter what happens on the final day of the season after they drew 1-1 in midweek against Leicester. It wasn’t the desired result for a team who have blown hot and cold this season but they have this last game at home to go out in style.

Recent form has seen just one defeat for the Blues but there have been too many draws which has hampered Thomas Tuchel’s side. You get the sense that they are still reeling from their Champions League exit and two cup final defeats against Liverpool- and the way it happened on penalties has fatigued the team. At home the club have gone three games without defeat although their last two games here have ended in draws against Wolves and Leicester. Defeat could mean Tottenham joining them on 71 points but goal difference would be enough to keep Tuchel’s team in 3rd.

Watford are in 19th and have earned just 1 point in their last 15, even though the Hornets are not bottom of the league it feels as if they have been the poorest especially in the last month. This was highlighted when in their last home game of the season they were thrashed 5-1 by Leicester who had nothing to play for. Watford could well finish bottom of the league although Norwich have to play Tottenham and will be big outsiders to get anything from that game.

Watford have performed better on the road with four wins but have lost 11 times and that includes defeats in their last 3. Their last away game ended in a 1-0 loss at Crystal Palace.

Team News:

Chelsea: Timo Werner (hamstring) and Mateo Kovacic (ankle) are both 50% to make this game.

Watford: Peter Etebo is out with a knock, Emmanuel Dennis is out with a knee injury. Cucho may return but has a lack of match fitness. Ismaila Sarr and Juraj Kucka are out both with their knee. Samir may return as he has recovered from his groin injury.

Chelsea vs Watford Head to Head:

This will be just the 39th meeting between the sides and Chelsea have won 22 of them.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Chelsea won 2-1.

Chelsea have won the last 5 meetings in a row and Watford have not beaten Chelsea in over four years.

Watford last beat Chelsea away from home in 1986.

Chelsea vs Watford Prediction:

Almost everyone will be in agreement that we will only be seeing a home win. Last week we predicted that Chelsea would do very well against Leicester here and that didn’t work out, for this game it should. This is the end of an era at the club with the Blues set to be taken over officially next month and there are certainly going to be uncertainties for the team going forward. No one knows if manager Thomas Tuchel will be at the club next season, some players will certainly leave and so you feel the least the team can give the fans would be a great home win in the last game of the season.

Chelsea are huge odds on but for value it is worth backing on the minus handicap, it would be a real surprise here not to see Chelsea get a good win and score a few goals. Keep an eye on Romelu Lukaku, a great centre forward, but the tactics at the club have not worked out for the Belgian. Could he be sold in the summer to raise funds? This could well be his last game for the Blues, anyway you look at it he will be determined to get on the score sheet so we will be backing him to do so. We expect goals in this one.
