Chelsea vs Tottenham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 23rd January 2022
Kick off at 4:30pm GMT
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

What a game this should be and these two London rivals have a long history that should suggest quite a frantic game with so much to play for.

Chelsea are looking good for a top four spot but their form has been questionable in the last six weeks, though it would still be a surprise if they were to slip out of the top four. Currently the Blues are in 3rd place and are a point behind Liverpool and have played two games more. Manchester United have caught up slightly in 4th place and have a game in hand over Chelsea and are six points behind. So there is pressure coming from all sides and Chelsea really need to start winning games again.

Thomas Tuchel’s side would be 11th on form and have not won since a game since Boxing Day when they beat Aston Villa. They have gone 4 games without victory, although, at least three of those ties have ended in draws. The clubs last game finished 1-1 away to Brighton. At home it is just 1 defeat but 5 draws from 11 games have really anchored them, and convert those into wins and the club would have 54 points and be challenging Manchester City for the title.

Tottenham have to be the favourites to finish 4th as it stands given that they are 2 points from their objective and have 3 games in hand over Manchester United. The club have completely changed under Antonio Conte and are unbeaten in the league under him. They stunned Leicester in their last game coming back from 2-1 down in injury time to win 3-2 and it is 3 wins in their last four games. We would have to go back to October to find the clubs last defeat and all seems very well at the club as they come into this game.

Chelsea vs Tottenham Prediction:

This will be a fascinating encounter because we will see how the quality of Antonio Conte has made an impact on this Tottenham side. The Italian has years of experience and make no mistake this will feel like a grudge match after what happened a few weeks ago in the EFL Cup. Then the clubs played two legs and Chelsea simply overpowered Tottenham winning 2-0 in the first leg at Stamford Bridge and 1-0 at Tottenham. Conte knows he is not with the finished article but teams managed by Conte learn very quick. It is why Tottenham are unbeaten in the league for 3 months. Just imagine if Nuno Espirito Santo was still with the club one could question would they even be in with a chance of a top four finish?

Chelsea are the better team and they will be the shorter price but they have been poor by their standards in getting 3 points on a consistent basis and looking good for their wins too. True they did against Tottenham in the EFL Cup but in the league the club have chucked away the title in the last month, and will need to find their early season form to even finish in the top four now.

Tottenham are going to give Chelsea a big test here and we think backing them on the handicap in a two horse race is a good choice. Conte’s team learn very quick.
