Chelsea vs Tottenham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 14th August 2022
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

Chelsea v Tottenham is always a huge fixture and given that both sides are predicted to finish in the top four and this is only the 2nd game of the season this will be a fascinating watch.

Both sides won their respective first games of the season. Chelsea beat Everton 1-0 away from home, the match was certainly not memorable but given the Blues lost to the same score line last season they will take that. Also Chelsea have not performed well at Goodison Park over the years, so all in all this has been a positive start for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Tottenham finished 4th last season pipping their eternal rivals Arsenal to a final Champions League place and Antonio Conte’s side are aiming higher for this campaign. They did fall behind to Southampton at home last weekend but powered back in style to smash the Saints 4-1. There’s a lot of confidence surrounding Tottenham right now, but can they find more consistency compared to last season and bridge the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City, that will be the key question.

Team News:

Chelsea: The only doubt for the Blues is new signing Kalidou Kouibaly who has some fatigue and will be assessed.

Tottenham: Oliver Skipp is ruled out with a foot injury but should be back before the end of the month, he is the only doubt for Spurs coming into this game.

Chelsea vs Tottenham Head to Head:

Chelsea beat Tottenham 2-0 in this fixture last season.

Chelsea have won the last 5 meetings in a row.

It’s been four years since Tottenham beat Chelsea in the league.

6 of the last seven meetings has ended in under 2.5 goals.

Chelsea vs Tottenham Prediction:

Despite losing some quality over the summer in the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Antonio Rudiger and the sale of the club we shouldn’t forget that Chelsea are still a strong unit. It was super important for the club to keep Thomas Tuchel as manager so there is some stability and with the German in charge Chelsea can still dream big. It would be too easy to shoot the Blues down after all the negative news about them last season with owner Roman Abramovich having to have his hand forced and sell the club. Questions were ultimately raised about the future of the club who have been one of the most successful in the past 20 years, but Chelsea are still a very strong side. All of these points are raised again because it is in facing clubs like Tottenham where Chelsea are going to be judged this season.

Tottenham are a side who have been in Chelsea’s shadow and with everything that has gone on over in west London one could expect to see a changing of the guard, will we see the beginnings of that on Sunday? Tottenham are going to be a force this season and may even win their most games in a Premier League season, but Chelsea away from home has never been an easy game for Tottenham. Yes they have the team to win but we need to witness Tottenham reaching for that new level and finding more consistency, and that is a tough ask against this Chelsea side who have recorded some great wins over Spurs in recent seasons. At the same time we can’t deny we are slightly blinded and this season could produce the Tottenham side that fans have craved as only one game has gone so far.

Goals wise it is interesting to see Tottenham score 4 last weekend and none came from Harry Kane. Kane usually has quiet August’s and scoring against this Chelsea side will not be easy. Expect a frantic and exciting game but we think Tottenham will manage at least a point from this encounter.
