Match Preview:
To round up this weekend’s Premier League football we have a repeat of the 2021 Champions League final but we also have a coming together of the two powerhouses of English football in the 21st Century. It is true that in the past two years Chelsea have fallen off the mantle but they have the quality, the manager and the money to come back strong and this should be a very interesting game.
The Blues were expected to lose last Monday night against the then unbeaten league leaders Tottenham but despite going a goal down they came back to win 4-1. Of course having to play against 9 players did help but Chelsea still had a job to do away from home and they did it. However one look at Chelsea’s home record and there is a fragility about it all. This is a club that have only recorded one win at home so far and have lost 50% of their games. While one of those losses was to the in-form Aston Villa, did anyone really see Chelsea losing against Brentford and Nottingham Forest here? Form has improved for Mauricio Pochettino’s side who have won 3 of their past five games although only 1 in their last 3. With 15 points to their name it is fair to say that as early as November the title is not on the cards but the Blues will be eyeing a top four finish although they cannot afford to keep dropping points at home and are 9 points from even that objective.
Manchester City have climbed back to the top of the table with 3 wins in a row. These have come against Brighton, Manchester United and Bournemouth and in those wins they have managed to score 11 goals. City are looking slick and have won 9 from their opening 11 games. However on the road there have been slip ups and their two defeats so far have come this way. Indeed from their last 3 games they have lost two of them which came against Wolves and Arsenal. The good news though was winning their last one which was the Manchester derby and winning it in style with a 3-0 score line. In midweek City had an easy run out as they beat Young Boys 3-0 and Erling Haaland scored yet another brace. He now has 15 goals in all competitions so far.
Team News:
Chelsea: Armando Broja is being tipped to finally return to the squad, but there is still a long injury list for the Blues and the following remain out for extended periods; Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka, Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia, Wesley Fofana an Trevoh Chabolah.
Manchester City: Sergio Gomez has an ankle injury and is expected to miss this game, John Stones is out with a muscle injury with no fixed return date. Kevin De Bruyne has a hamstring injury and isn’t expected back for another month.
Chelsea vs Man City Head to Head:
Last season Manchester City won this fixture 1-0.
Manchester City have won the last six meetings in a row.
There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
It’s been three years since Chelsea beat Manchester City at home in the league.
Chelsea vs Man City Prediction:
Chelsea will have to raise their game for this visit and they will take heart in just beating a good Tottenham side but the Blues had the help of offsides, VAR and two sendings off. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t capable of beating the quality sides but judging on what we have seen since August that suggests that the club have little chance at this moment in time over City.
We will be backing the champions to win and take advantage also of Tottenham’s slip up on Saturday. Erling Haaland is a man for the big occasions and we will back him to open the scoring with better value in a game that should possess a lot of quality and certainly a lot of tension. Chelsea may well be on the right road but a game like this may well have come too soon for them.
