Brighton vs Newcastle: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 13th August 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Amex Stadium

Match Preview:

Talk about pull the plug on the party, and that’s what Graham Potter and Brighton did on the opening weekend of the season as they went to Old Trafford and beat Manchester United 2-1. At one point the Seagulls were cruising at two up and there victory never really looked in doubt. Some want to underplay the achievement but it was huge given that United were starting the season with a new manager, new chapter, a new page and yet Brighton had beaten United for the second time in a row, scoring 6 goals in those two games.

Potter’s side will now play their first game of the season at home and with a renewed strength, and their motivation will be high to face Newcastle who are expected to do well this season. With the right result Brighton could well finish the weekend on top of the league, and to be fair Newcastle haven’t travelled well to the AMEX Stadium in recent years.

As for Newcastle they were expected not to just beat newly promoted Nottingham Forest but beat them well. However in the end and playing at home the Magpies had to settle for a 2-0 victory. It was still very much welcome though and Eddie Howe’s side were completely dominant with 10 shots on target compared to none from Forest. The second half of last season was a successful one for Newcastle and they will be expected to continue that form and we should expect to see that. The players have gelled very well and the ambition at the club is the highest since the Kevin Keegan days in the mid to late 1990s.

Team News:

Brighton: There are no major injuries to the first team coming into this match and only Jakub Moder will be missing through a long term knee injury.

Newcastle: Fernandez remains a doubt with a calf injury. Jamaal Lascelles has a thigh injury but will be assessed. Both Jamal Lewis (groin) and Jonjo Shelvey (hamstring) are major doubts to recover in time for this game.

Brighton vs Newcastle Prediction:

Newcastle are going to be very strong this season, but one has to reserve judgement on how strong Howe’s side will be when it comes to playing away. At home the Magpies will not fear any side, and will go all out attack but this fixture looks very tricky on paper and it is sure that Newcastle will respect their opponents.

Brighton will be very confident going into this game and we can expect the atmosphere to be a good one, the win over United has set the team up well and if they can avoid key injuries there is no reason why Potter’s side can not have a solid season and make progress.

This game being so early in the season there is no reason to think we won’t see a very exciting end to end game with both clubs having chances. This could well be one of the most open and entertaining games of the weekend and even if past fixtures point to a lack of goals we think that will be the opposite for this game. With attacks come gaps and Newcastle look like the stronger all round team. But the key point here is that we have two teams high on confidence, they will both feed off the crowd and each others play, and this should result in a very enjoyable game of football.
