Brighton vs Aston Villa: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 13th November 2022
Kick off at 2pm GMT
Venue: Amex Stadium

Match Preview:

Only a matter of weeks ago Brighton were managed by Graham Potter and Aston Villa by Steven Gerrard and that’s all change now, that is how football works. Roberto De Zerbi has a few more weeks in his new job than Unai Emery at Villa but this still feels like a new meeting of the minds, and for that this should be a fascinating game.

De Zerbi had found it hard to win his first game with Brighton but had his side playing good football nonetheless but they have recoreded some good results including drawing 3-3 away to Liverpool beating Chelsea 4-1 and knocking Arsenal out of the EFL Cup in midweek. Coming into this weekend Brighton are in 6th place with 21 points with just one defeat in their last four.

Aston Villa won just their fourth game of the season last weekend but it was hugely significant as it was Unai Emery’s first game in charge and it was against Manchester United. Villa looked like a new team as they dismantled United and won 3-1. The future for now looks very good for Villa who have won 2 of their last 3 games. Villa could move within 3 points of Brighton with victory here although they have the second to worst away record in the league winning just 2 points from a possible 21 but the fans will have more belief now with Emery in charge.

Team News:

Brighton: The Seagulls have no new injuries although Jakub Moder is a long term absentee with a knee injury and he isn’t due back until next March.

Aston Villa: Philippe Coutinho is out until after the World Cup with a muscle injury. Diego Carlos is out long term with his Achilles.

Brighton vs Aston Villa Head to Head:

Last season Aston Villa won this fixture 2-0.

It’s been 8 games going back 42 years since Brighton managed to beat Aston Villa when being at home.

In the last 14 meetings Brighton has just 1 victory over Aston Villa.

The last 3 meetings in a row have all seen under 2.5 goals.

Brighton vs Aston Villa Prediction:

These two clubs look well matched coming into this game and Aston Villa have improved in recent weeks and under Emery they should find some good form, although the break for the World Cup probably won’t help their momentum that they have now. Brighton are looking solid too and the players are clearly responding to De Zerbi’s tactics, it is as if Graham Potter was never there. However Brighton have had many problems against Aston Villa to the point where they look like the Seagulls bogey side. It is interesting how when at home they have found it very hard to beat them and with Emery now in charge that could be set to continue.

A draw feels like the right result here with what the teams have achieved up until now but make no mistake both clubs will sense an opportunity to get a huge 3 points. Brighton would go past Manchester United with a win if United lost or even drew their game on the same day against Fulham. What we have noticed is that simply Villa have avoided defeat here for almost half a century with many games not being won but being drawn, so backing the away side on the double chance and covering the draw could be the way to go. We don’t expect many goals and this could well play out like a game of chess where the victories will come down to midfield.
