Brentford vs Arsenal: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 18th September 2022
Kick off at 12noon BST
Venue: Brentford Community Stadium

Match Preview:

The Bees are buzzing and come into this game undefeated in their last three. This follows draws against Everton and Crystal Palace and a brilliant 5-2 win over Leicester to put them in 8th place where they have 9 points already.

We have seen time and again clubs coming up from the Championship having a decent first season and then being relegated in their second and manager Thomas Frank is trying to buck that idea with his team and for now Brentford look like a solid unit. Not many would have predicted that the club would be on the same points as Liverpool by the middle of September. It’s been just one defeat so far for them and they are unbeaten at home.

Arsenal have had a solid start and although they lost their first game this season against Manchester United they are still top of the league. Their lead however is only by 1 point and it is a possibility that they could be as low as 3rd coming into this game given that Manchester City and Tottenham will play a day earlier. Many observers believe that the Gunners played well despite losing to United and they have won 5 of their opening six games and will be the favourites to win here also.

Mikel Arteta’s side opened their Europa League campaign with a 2-1 win away at Zurich in midweek and with the travel involved Brentford will be hoping that can play a slight advantage to them as the club have been able to rest.

Team News:

Brentford: Christian Norgaard is ruled out and won’t return for at least two weeks due to an Achilles injury. Ethan Pinnock has made progress with his knee but is about two weeks away from a return.

Arsenal: Emile Smith-Rowe will be assessed due to a knock, Thomas Partey is out for a few weeks with an ongoing thigh injury. Nelson Reiss remains out with a muscle injury and Mohamed Elneny is out with no fixed return date due to a hamstring injury.

Brentford vs Arsenal Head to Head:

The clubs have only played each other 15 times and Brentford have the most wins with 6 so far.

Last season this fixture finished 2-0 to Brentford.

From the last 6 meetings Brentford has managed just one win.

In the last three meetings which have all taken place within the last four years Brentford has managed to score on each occasion.

Brentford vs Arsenal Prediction:

Brentford are in a good place and they will feel confident any time they are at home this season but make no mistake this is big test for them. Of course they were able to beat Arsenal here last season but it was their first game in the top flight since 1947, an evening game, and there would have been a special atmosphere at the ground. There will be again on Sunday of course and Arsenal will have to be on their game to get anything here. There is also the added factor of Ivan Toney for the Bees who has been in great form and got a hat trick in his last game. This has been recognised by Gareth Southgate who has called up the forward for England’s international games later this month so he like his side will be buzzing.

Arsenal have looked sharp so far this season but many said they were naive against Manchester United in their defeat. It has been a word often used against Arsenal for the past few years and another term could be mental strength. Remember it is possible that both Manchester City and Tottenham would have passed the Gunners coming into this game, and this is where the psychological aspects of the game can take over. Some players may look at the table and see that they are no longer in first place and have some doubts and this isn’t an easy ground to come too. For now though and with the way the Gunners are playing we will give them the benefit of the doubt and believe that they have moved on from last season and back them to win this game. It should be a very entertaining fixture.
