Belgium vs Portugal: Preview and Prediction

European Championships 2020

Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Estadio de La Cartuja

Match Preview:

A heavyweight tie will take place on Sunday evening as Belgium the No.1. ranked nation according to FIFA will play the current holders of the Euro’s in Portugal. The depth of talent on the field automatically makes this the game of the Euro’s so far.

Belgium have had a no nonsense approach to these finals claiming 3 straight victories over Russia, Denmark and Finland and they have lost just 1 game from their past 29 matches. The talent pool is obviously rich with Kevin de Bruyne pulling the strings in midfield, Eden Hazard is back and Romelu Lukaku is coming off his best season yet, winning the Serie A title with Inter Milan.

The Belgians are looking super confident and composed and are full of goals and this will be an interesting tie.

We have seen bullish tactics from Portugal, we have seen them exposed and we have seen the beauty of them also. They have qualified from a difficult group containing Germany and France and even Hungary proved that they were no roll overs. It has been a group stage dominated once again by Cristiano Ronaldo who has scored 5 goals already. Ronaldo now has 109 international goals and needs just 1 more to break the all time international goals record.

Portugal have beaten Hungary, but they drew 2-2 against France and lost 4-2 to Germany, though two of those goals were own goals. Maybe there are question marks over the mental strength of the team but the Portuguese remain a dangerous opponent.

Team News:

Belgium: There are no injuries for the Belgians coming into this game.

Portugal: There are no injury concerns but the news is more centered on if Bruno Fernandes will start, he could lose his place to Renato Sanches who has impressed in the last few games.

Belgium vs Portugal Head to Head:

Belgium have not beaten Portugal since 1989.

The last time the nations played was in 2018 in a friendly which ended 0-0.

The two nations have never met in a finals tournament only in qualifying.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Belgium vs Portugal Prediction:

Both teams possess the quality to beat each other if we are being honest. But one is reminded of the 2018 World Cup when this talented Belgian side came up against Brazil and they beat them 1-0. This wouldn’t have felt possible years before and it seemed that Belgian had gone up a level. Now they will face another champion and they could repeat that trick.

Tempers will flare whatever happens and expect the game to get physical whoever is losing and so backing the card market could make sense. Lukaku and Ronaldo could be the stars of the game, they are the two Serie A top goalscorers from last season and Lukaku will feel that he wants to show the world stage what he is about currently.

This is a mouth watering prospect all round and we should see some great football that hopefully isn’t ruined by negative aggression as can so be the case when two big favourites meet. Whoever wins could well reach the final, so this is a huge match that should be very enjoyable on the eye.
