Aston Villa vs Everton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 13th August 2022
Kick off at 12:30pm BST
Venue: Villa Park

Match Preview:

It’s only the 2nd game of the season but given that both of these clubs started off with defeats there will be a purpose in this game and the teams will be wanting to get a front foot early on in an encounter which could be fraught with tension from the very first whistle.

Aston Villa lost against newly promoted side Bournemouth last weekend by 2-0 and even though they were away from home manager Steven Gerrard was visibly upset and it is always a downer to start with a defeat. Though Villa created 15 chances on goal only 2 were on target and that will be an early worry for everyone concerned at the club. However there should be no need to panic and this is Villa’s first game at home in this lunch time kick off which should have quite an electric atmosphere.

Everton were stacked with worries about their status in the Premier League last season and the feeling is that Frank Lampard’s side could well experience the same emotions this season too. On paper Everton have recruited the best they can in defence and midfield, obviously on a low budget and it was telling at Goodison Park last weekend how Lampard views his team playing 5 at the back in a home fixture. The Toffees were playing Chelsea and who knows if that tactic will change against lesser quality but with very little quality up front for the club playing five at the back could become the norm for the team.

Everton lost 1-0 against Chelsea falling to a penalty in the end in a game which wasn’t even memorable for the winners. Of course in a difficult last season Everton won that fixture and this could be at the back of Everton’s fans thoughts too. Whilst is it never good to lose your first game and that being at home compounds it, Chelsea could well finish in a high position and they won’t be an easy opponent for anyone. Since then Everton have come to an agreement with Wolves for the loan of Conor Coady to yet again bolster defence.

Team News:

Aston Villa: Kienan Davis has some fitness issues and is only 50/50 to return for this game. Kortney Hause is out with a knee injury and had surgery before the season, currently there is no fixed date on his return.

Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin isn’t due back for five weeks with a knee injury. Ben Godfrey has a leg injury sustained in the first game of the season, and has no return date. Seamus Coleman has a lack of match fitness and is due to miss out, Tom Davies may return from a muscle injury and will be assessed. Andre Gomes also has a muscle injury and he hasn’t been ruled out of this game but likely won’t return until until after. Yerry Mina has a ligament injury and is a major doubt and Andros Townsend is out long term with a knee injury.

Aston Villa vs Everton Head to Head:

Everton haven’t beaten Aston Villa since 2016.

Last season Aston Villa did the double over Everton and in this fixture they comfortable won 3-0.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Aston Villa vs Everton Prediction:

This is a coming together of the two great English midfielder’s Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard who were so fantastic for their respective clubs Liverpool and Chelsea but failed to impress when playing together for England. There will be a lot of respect between the two men as they try to carry their managerial positions forward. Both come into this game with pressure. Much is expected for Gerrard whose career in the dug out all seems like a tester for one day managing Liverpool, but Gerrard is coming into his most microscopic season as a manager and he needs to deliver.

A defeat here will feel like a real worry for Everton, the clubs seem evenly matched and on paper this Everton team do not look sensational or exciting but Lampard is trying to build a solid unit after some of the terrible defending witnessed last season. This is a game where a piece of magic could be the difference but in truth this feels like it has a draw written all over it. Everton do not have a good recent record over their opponents and are being quoted at 5.00 to win this one but if we cover the double chance, we take in 66% of result options and the Toffees are now quoted at 2.00. As long as they keep their shape Lampard’s side can frustrate Villa in a game where they will be thinking it is vital to pick up some points.
