Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 15th May 2022
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: Villa Park

Match Preview:

It’s 11th and 12th place coming together here and this game will be important for both sets of teams as they try to finish as high as they can this season. A top half finish to the season is still both on for the clubs and just 1 point separates them, holding that advantage is Crystal Palace.

Aston Villa’s form has felt disjointed lately and just when you think they have turned a corner they start dropping points. However in their last game that would have been expected given they were playing Liverpool and Villa’s 3 game unbeaten run came to an end with a 2-1 home defeat. At home it has to be said that overall it’s been disappointing from Steven Gerrard’s side even though he hasn’t been in charge from the beginning of the season of course but they have lost 50% of their games and recent home form has seen them lose 3 of their last 4.

Crystal Palace come into this game in good form and it is clear that the Eagles will want to have a strong finish to the season. They have gone their last 3 games unbeaten with a draw against Leeds and two wins over Southampton and Watford, it’s been almost a month since the club tasted defeat.

On the road Patrick Vieira’s side have only won four games though but recent away form has been more encouraging and they have 3 wins from their last five games.

Team News:

Aston Villa: Ollie Watkins has a knock and is a doubt for this game, however he will be assessed. Leon Bailey looks set to miss another game with his ankle injury, he is hopeful to make it back before the end of the season though.

Crystal Palace: James McArthur has a muscle injury and is a major doubt to be ready for this match. Marc Guehi is only 50/50 to return from an ankle injury but reports suggest he won’t make it. Vicente Guaita has a slight knock and will be assessed. Nathan Ferguson has been ruled out for the season due to a lack of match fitness.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace Head to Head:

Last season Aston Villa won this fixture 3-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Aston Villa won 2-1.

Aston Villa have won three games in a row at home to Crystal Palace and you would have to go back to 2013 for the last time Palace won here.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace Prediction:

It will be good to see Steven Gerrard pitting his tactics against Patrick Vieira- these two great players are fondly remembered in the Premier League and now they are managers. Perhaps they are with clubs that are supposed to be stepping stones for something greater in the future and both look very determined to do well with their respective clubs. There isn’t much between the teams and both have decent form coming into this one and with similar seasons there really is very little between the clubs.

We will back Villa to edge through and get the win. The club have looked quite solid at home over the past few weeks when facing similar quality and it should be noted that Palace do not have a great record coming here and it’s been almost 10 years since they have recorded a victory.

Also worth backing is Phillipe Coutinho to score. The former Barcelona player who was on loan to Villa will sign a permanent deal that was confirmed this week. He started well at the club and has helped them in midfield and with this good news he could be looking to get forward more and being at home will take those risks in this game, he is great value to score also.
